"No More Gay Roles," Sez Darryl Stephens
Heading For Hetero Ground

shockedstephens.jpg
Darryl Stephens became a homo household name for his titular role on Logo's groundbreaking and canceled slapstick sudster, Noah's Arc. His effortless performance on the series - as well as his appearance in a number of other gay media, including the recently released Boy Culture - led many to assume Stephens's is gay. In a recent interview with South Africa's Mamba Online, however, Stephens again refuses to divulge the truth:

I feel that in Los Angeles – in the industry – people can sometimes get caught up in the personal lives of actors. You can see it on a large scale with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. It becomes an ordeal to me. People want to make such a big deal about what people are doing in their personal lives... I don’t feel that people have seen me play enough characters. I think that if people feel too invested in my personal life they’ll lose sight of my capacity to grow and surprise them with new roles.
Wait, did he just compare himself to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie? Wow.

As a part of his efforts to break away from the gays, Stephens says he's calling it quits on the queer characters, "I have actually put a moratorium on gay roles for the time being..." Don't worry, though, he says that if Logo does move ahead with the rumored Ark movie, he'll still sign up: "Noah is a great character for me. A lot of people relate to him – he’s a gift. I won’t give up playing this character."

actors tend to get pigeonholed. good for him for trying to break out early in his career. RuPaul and Divine only got to play straight after they got stunt-casted into their roles.

I can't even get into a fucking casting room unless I have duct tape between my legs even with a litany of credits. I'm on Daryll's side. I'm not as famous as he is and I have a stalker so i don't know why there's issue taken with his relating to Brangelina.

Build it up to tear it down, huh? I love that he's not playing by the supposed protocol of what someone who's assumed to be gay and playing a gay character should do.

"We defy augury. There is special providence in the fall of a sparrow."

There were rumors the author of that was a fag too. We should exhume him, Liberace and Paul Lynde and prop em up and try and get an opinion on this outta them.

I all for people deciding on what personal information they choose to share (or not). However, when new actors play roles like the ones Stephens chooses, it's going to be a question that gets asked repeatedly.

I encourage him to stretch himself with a variety of roles. But let's get serious; avoiding the gay question when the answer is obvious is kinda silly. Some gays can "pass"; some can't.

He may want to note that Sean Hayes and Nathan Lane haven't made gay declarations and still haven't skyrocketed into straightdom after their famous gay roles.

The blogs here prove exactly Stephens point. Indeed, because we see folks in certain spaces, we associate them with those spaces. For instance, someone mentioned seeing him at the Abbey. Would it not be hypocritical for an actor who plays gay roles to not associate with gay poeple. Secondly, everyone (actor or no actor) has the option to selct the roles tehy wish to play. While Stephens did not say eh wouldn't play gay roles, he is admitting that he wants other challenges. tehre is nothing wrong with that.

Darryl Stephens is an amazing, beautiful and brilliant actor. Jealous people shouldn't try to place him in a box. (yeah, i said box ;) He has tremendous wings, let him fly! The gay community should be proud of the work that he has done and want him to shine. Would we tell an artist, " your best works have been in blues, that is the only color you should work in." ? Our society has gotten so caught up in gossip and other people's business that they have lost all perspective. We are the viewing public, we are here to view the work. The artist has a choice on the work, and we have the choice to participate, not dictate. Darryl Stephens is an exquisite representation of himself. We should all be so blessed. And by the by, blogging is not journalism.

He is a very talented actor and would be great in any role he decided to pursue. Why should he limit his self. I would love to see him take on new roles and grow as an actor. As far as his personal life goes it should be just that personal(NO BODIES BUSINESS)! As a True Friend and Fan of Mr. Stephens I say "BACK OFF!!" Find some other way to get attention. Darryl continue to do you. You have every right to take your career in any direction you choose. You have a huge fanbase and we know you will be extremely successful in any role you play. WHY? Because you're an awesome and talented actor. Don't let these HATERS get you down no matter what they say. Isn't it strange all this negative bullshit started after Boy Culture 's opening weekend was wildly successful, sold out, and received rave reviews? I say the haters just can't stand your success. It wasn't only the gay community that made you a success. You have a very diverse fan base. Heteros, homos, bi, FEMALES, males, blacks, whites, Asians, Jews, etc. Just know that your true fans will always love and appreciate you and will support you in everything you do. Don't worry baby, we got your back. As for the haters who choose to dwell on whether or not D is gay, who gives a damn. You people need to get a life and get the hell out of Darryl's.

Jeremiah says:

Evidently, he posted a blog complaining about being critcized on his site, so his folks have come out to support.

I like Darryl's work. My only issue is that ONLY gay actors seem to be about the business of concealing their sexuality. Who cares? If someone asks you whether you're gay tell the truth. Be proud. You're an actor who should be ACT-ting regardless.

For, him to say that he's not interested in gay roles for the time being is certainly his choice. However, it's limiting to insinuate that he's played ALL kinds of gay. There's no diversity in the roles he's played. None of his prominent queer roles have been particularly challenging. He has yet to disappear into a character (and that is likely due to the weak material and talent he's working with). If a "gay" role comes along that allows him to prove he has range, I'd suggest that he consider that over trying to play "straight." Like that's the holy grail.

I like Darryl and his work. I don't think he meant to be insensitive, but I, also, think that he should accept that he was. He's reinscribing the same sort of harmful value assignments (gay is limiting, straight is liberating) that continue to effect the self-esteem of gay--and particulaly gay black--youth. This whole "I won't say whether I'm gay or not, smacks of THE DOWNLOW syndrome." It's so old and sad. Especially when he has an opportunity to be a role model. The fact is, it's not just about "him" anymore. His voice reverberates. Say what you like, but expect dissent. It's a beautiful thing.

First of all Jeremiah, Darryl was not complaining about this damn blog. What he did was let us know what happened and how he felt about it, which is something he does quite often with his myspace page. His blogs are a direct communication from him to us.

What is so fucking funny about all of this, is that had anybody with any sense had done some research on Darryl, his sexuality would have not been a question. It's obvious this was a quick dumbass thought in a fucked up as person's mind.

Darryl is my friend and I know him personally. You people no nothing about him and who said he has to be a fucking role model for anybody? You!!! Who are you??? You be the role model you think this world so desperately needs. As far as the gay roles he has taken. I'm not a movie executive, but I know a lot of gay roles aren't out there to be taken. Plus, gay movies are so limited. Theatres won't purchase them, and you might find one theatre in each city that may show a gay movie.

Darryl doesn't have to limit himself and he definitely doesn't need to feel bad about HIS choices for his life. I don't fuckin care if you or any other person does or does not like him or his acting. All I can say is I will be there for every minute of everything he chooses to do.

I know nothing about you, but somehow I know I don't like you!!

You tell him Valerie. Jeremiah, who says Darryl is concealing his sexuality? What he said is that at this in his career, he doesn't think it's productive or necessary to discuss his personal life. I agree with him 100%. Personally, I think the media is far too intrusive and disrespectful about the privacy of young African American actors. Much more so than with young white actors. You ask who cares about Darryl's sexuality? Obviously, you and alot of others care that he's not waving a banner declaring: "Hey Everybody I'm Gay." Darryl is being enough of a role model by never being arrested for drunk driving and by not being arrested for using and/or selling illegal drugs. The sad thing that you don't seem to realize is that IT IS JUST ABOUT DARRYL. It's about His life, His career, and His right to explore and pursue whatever roles for his career growth that he chooses. If Darryl doesn't take responsibility for his own growth and development as an actor, just who the hell will? Certainly not you and the other haters.

I can understand that the gay community wants a "role model" but ultimately this is Darryl's life. He is not on the DOWNLOW! He just does not discuss his sexuality with the media...Everyone in his PERSONAL life know his orientation. I just don't understand. Why is it okay for a straight actor to play a gay role (they are even applauded for it) yet you are giving Darryl grief for wanting to play a straight role. By they way, he did not say he would never play another gay role...just not for a while. I am sure that if a wonderful role came about and the character happened to be gay Darryl would jump at the chance to play that part. I admit I don't know much about the entertainment industry but I do recognize that studios are looking for actors who can transform. Darryl needs to expand his horizons and I love that he is honest enough to say so.
