Minnesota state law may forbid same-sex discrimination, but that didn't stop the Rochester Athletic Club from denying a lesbian couple their family discount. Amy and Sarah Monson and their daughter hoped to save about $500 a year through the familial deal, but RAC insists that only legally-wed couples constitute a "family".
At first, the women tried to talk it out, but staffers stood firm. Now, the girls - with the help of activist group, OutFront Minnesota -have filed a lawsuit against the catty club.
Though the Amy and Sarah refused to comment, OutFront's staff attorney Phil Duran remarks:
From a financial standpoint, it's not a big indignity. For someone to stand behind a counter at a health club and say, sorry, your family doesn't exist, that's a pretty big indignity.Yeah, it's pretty bitchy.
