It's nice to know that not all military types are as bigoted as General Peter Pace. Former Republican Senator and army man, Alan K. Simpson has penned an editorial admonishing Pace's comments. Simpson insists the goverment must overturn Don't Ask, Don't Tell.
Though he once supported the discriminatory measure, Simpson's had a change of heart:
My thinking shifted when I read that the military was firing translators because they are gay. According to the Government Accountability Office, more than 300 language experts have been fired under "don't ask, don't tell," including more than 50 who are fluent in Arabic. This when even Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice recently acknowledged the nation's "foreign language deficit" and how much our government needs Farsi and Arabic speakers. Is there a "straight" way to translate Arabic? Is there a "gay" Farsi? My God, we'd better start talking sense before it is too late. We need every able-bodied, smart patriot to help us win this war.He goes on to say that he's had the "pleasure" of working with gay folk and that homosexuality "says little about the person". Except, of course, that they get down with the same-sex, of course.
The Washington Post editors also spoke out against Pace, writing:
...When it comes to shaping public policy, he's obligated to reach a bit higher -- to consider facts and evidence and the impact of his public expressions of intolerance on the men and women he commands.Don't you just love with editorial types lay the smack down?
...
As Gen. Pace considers the uproar over his remarks on morality, he might reflect on Marine Staff Sgt. Eric Fidelis Alva, who like his father and grandfather chose to serve in the military. When he enlisted 17 years ago, he lied about his sexual orientation. Sgt. Alva was the first American wounded in the Iraq war, when he stepped on a land mine. President Bush presented him with the Purple Heart. His moral fitness for duty was unquestioned. What's immoral is that Sgt. Alva -- and thousands of other brave members of the armed forces -- had to lie or be silent for the right, the risk and the honor of serving his country.
Congrats Mr. Simpson and welcome home to sanity. Now, many of your conservative brethren will continue to argue that the purpose of an army is not to promote justice or civil amity but to win wars, but the funny thing is that opposing gays in the military is precisely an attempt to use the military as a means of fighting a culture war. The idea that the military can not––should not––reflect/promote social change is patently ridiculous. Militaries have often promoted social change, some of it beneficial. The Italian army may not have won very many battles, for example, but it did give Italians a sense of being Italian. The desegregation of the American army similarly played an important role in the civil rights struggle. The society at large, after all, has become vastly more tolerant of homosexuality than the military. Institutionalizing anti-homosexuality in the army isn't primarily a way of maintaining military strength. That's a transparent excuse. Conservatives are just looking for ways to fight back against the increasing legitimation of homosexuality in mainstream. In short, conservatives are sacrificing our national security in order to further their religious agenda.
For a republican, simpson's a bit of all right. he was one of the first joiners of that gay-inclusive group a few years ago.
anyone else feeling like they'll repeal the DADT so that can reinstate the draft at some point? if they tried it now, the unwilling could claim gay.
haha- no, 'cause bush already filed some sort of law/policy stating that DADT does not apply in the case of the draft being re-instated.
Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (the position Gen Pace holds) Shalikashvili came out against DADT several weeks ago but it got hardly any attention at the time. Maybe it will be revisited now. He was Chairman during the time that DADT was instituted. He said many things had influenced his change but a recent Zogby poll that indicated the majority of military members didn't really seem to care if they served with someone who was gay tipped the scale.
Alan Simpson made a speech quoting Othello when he attacked a powerless black lady in Oct 1991, at the Clarence Thomas Hearing( nomination on Supreme Court Judgeship), accusing her of being fired for using the word " 'faggot". The woman, Angela, never had any hearing did not get to testify, adamantly denied that she used the word "faggot". But ,then she was a woman, black had no power, and was from the South. Yet, Simpson plays a down and dirty game of personal destruction. The F what is inappropriate as is the N word.
However, actions speak louder than words, and when those actions are devoid of decency, fair play, then, America should not be fooled on who Simpson really is , despite his slick political games. Simpson likes to blabber about 2nd chances, Anglea was not provided even a first chance to tesitify in the Senate. It made the proceedings look like some KGB Soviet farce, devoid of any fairness, a
sham. But, Simpson likes his Othello speech---to grand stand for T. V-- when
the reality is it was a product of a frame job--- to frame a poor, powerless black woman, Angela Wright.
Don't let the misuse of power fool America as to the reality on matters.
Simpson should have given a speech in Othello on the "Green eyed monster that doth mock the meat it eats", it would have been more appropirate for the circus put on by the GOP Cabal of Senators in the Thomas Hearings. Seems Simpson was using FBI reports on any who said anything about Thomas( e. g. Hill), as the Bush Admin( 41) controlled the Bush FBI. Simpson; didn't he have prior problems with the law so as to disqualify him from even being in the FBI, yet he was sure big on using FBI reports on any who even thought about testifying against Clarence.
