Conservos Just Won't Shut Up About Day Of Silence
Need Lesson In Rationality

glassdonkey.jpg
April 18th marks the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network's 11th annual "Day of Silence", when thousands of students, teachers and parents shut their traps to raise awareness of anti-gay oppression. Participants are meant to carry a card explaining their muteness with a note asking readers, "What are you going to do to break the silence?"

Conservative groups, however, aren't having it. And, in fact, can't seem to shut their own traps about how much they oppose the idea. One coalition, NotOurKids, has planned a counter protest in which they'll keep their children at home, lest they be subjected to the silent sissie scourge. One concerned parent's comments, however, make us wonder if they actually thought their action through.

Founder of the California-based Mission America and NotOurKids participant, Linda says she's keeping her spawn home because "Teenagers deserve an opportunity to study... without being subjected to pro-homosexual proselytizing sanctioned by school authorities". Proselytizing? Interesting choice of words coming from a woman whose organization dedicated to spreading the word of Christ, but okay...

Harvey goes on to remark:

Students shouldn't be forced to self-censor or adopt beliefs contrary to those of their parents and places of worship. Even the strongest of our junior high and high school children are not equipped to serve as frontline soldiers in this culture war.
Well, then, shouldn't you stop inculcating them with your hateful messages? Seriously, if you don't want them participating in this nasty and seemingly never ending war of words (no pun intended), then leave them out of it entirely.

But, the most ridiculous aspect of Harvey's stance comes in the fact that she feels the Day of Silence will disrupt her children's learning, so she'd rather them not go to school at all? Um, did she go to school?

I'm confused or maybe just an old fart (probably both), but how is silence in a school going to disrupt her children's learning?

We open our mouthes to protest, they bitch. We don't say anything, they bitch. What do these people want?

I think it's hilarious...even if she keeps the kids at home, they will know why -- and it STILL means that the message of the day of silence gets out...she's an idiot.

WOW! So, no one told me about it this year and I missed it sadly enough. However, I really don't see how a day of silence hurts the school's concentration level, if anything, wouldn't the kids pay attention MORE?
