You kids may be intereted to hear that Indian American Purva Bedi's accepted the lead role in Manan Katohora's controversial film, When Kiran met Karen.
What's so controversial about WKK. Well not only is it a mainstream movie with lesbian tendencies (a shocking feat in and of itself), but concerns an Indian actress who falls in love with another actress. It seems a number of Indian actresses were approached for the role, bu every single one of them turned it down after reading the lesbianic fine print. It's precisely this squeamishness that attracted Bedi to the roll. She tell's AfterEllen's Malinda Lo:
That's one of the reasons I really want to do the movie … 'cause you know that once the movie's made, everyone in India 's going to watch it... I want to make this movie so that actresses there can start to play those parts and not be so scared of it.Also, it's a sure fire way to jump start a career.
The change really is incredible. In fact, we'd never heard of the girl until about five minutes ago. You can be sure now that we've heard she's playing a lesbian, we'll never forget the name - um - oh, you know, that girl with the funny sounding name who played Translator #1 on Boston Legal.
We may jest, but we're sure when she visits India she'll be greeted like a hero for everything that's depraved, immoral and downright shameful.
(Astute readers will notice that we've switched some descriptive text. We originally wrote "American Indian" to describe good old what's her name's heritage. This makes it seem like she's a Native American. She's not. She's an Indian American - which, of course, is much different.)
Is she American Indian or Indian American? Because if a Native American is playing a South Asian person, that's way more interesting than the whole lesbian thing...
