Todd Verow's Vacationland opens today (well, it does in Manhattan) and the reviews haven't exactly been glowing. The tale – supposedly framed after producer-director Verow's own life – follows the paths of Joe and Andrew, two Bangor, Maine, high school lovers bound for college. Typical tales of cruising, drunken nights, and sleeping with the French teacher ensue. But as the New York Times puts it, "Too bad the title 'Another Gay Movie' is already in use." Not that we won't see it, of course — how could we ever turn down a chance to see some man-kissing on the big screen? Chimes the Village Voice:
... the movie quickly becomes ensnared in a tangle of subplots, most of them either inadequately developed (Joe's relationship with a dying artist, his sister's efforts to escape Bangor, his mother's troubles with an abusive boyfriend) or eventually dropped (the boys' two girlfriends, Andrew's problems at home). The main story line turns out to be the worst narrative idea, throwing the movie onto an unwelcome abuse-revenge trajectory that stifles any would-be humor.
But hell. If Little Man can find an audience, surely Vacationland can, too.
