GLAAD Fires Back Over "Anti-Gay" Media Awards
Shot Lands In Foot?

fuzzytv.jpg
GLAAD will host its 18th annual media awards tonight in New York City. Though the event should be a celebration of queer accomplishments in the media, it may lead to a celluloid schism.

As we reported last week, gay television network here! guffawed at GLAAD's refusal to allow gay media submissions. As the complaint snowballed and the non-profit drew more fire, GLAAD representatives issued a statement in which they insist gay media once had a seat at the submissions table, but that they squandered the opportunity...

For a short time in the late 1990s, GLAAD nominated and presented GLAAD Media Awards in LGBT media categories. This created significant tension in GLAAD's relationship with LGBT media outlets. Many of the outlets believed that GLAAD shouldn't be in the business of monitoring, evaluating and judging their work. That criticism, combined with the fact that the vast majority of LGBT outlets did not submit material for nomination, resulted in a decision to discontinue those awards in 1999.
The termination occurred long before the rise of gay networks like here! an Logo, which broadcasts the awards despite being excluded from the submission process.

GLAAD's statement goes on to plant themselves firmly in the midst of mainstream media:

GLAAD's work focuses on transforming the way mainstream media tell lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) stories. Some of these outlets still traffic in defamatory representations... Throughout the year, GLAAD focuses on advocating for and creating cultural change by reaching – via the media – the millions of Americans whose attitudes about our right to equality we must work to transform.
Of course, they conclude said statement with their prepackaged "inclusive" ideology. As we've said before, Hollywood's all about the fantasy...

This scuffle makes us wonder if GLAAD will open its ivory gates to the gays or if, perhaps, another organization will pop up to celebrate queer media. If that happens, where will that leave GLAAD out in the cold? Only time will tell. One thing's for sure, they increasingly irrelevant organization's only digging itself deeper. Our advice? Give the fags a little more leg room. It's only in that way that we can actually fight "homophobic" images in media. If not, we'll end up with straight-washed versions of ourselves. And nobody wants that.

Its funny when some one is called to task about blatant discriminatory practices they try muddy the picture. Well hopefully they will decided its 2007 and not 1999 anymore and get their act together and do the right thing. It's not that hard, say "oops, we are wrong times are changing and so are we, we are going to do right by our community that supports us with money."

To me if they try to do any more explaining outside of a straight forward apology with no excuses like but we... They have lost all standing as an organization.

GLAAD has been a sad joke for many, many years. They've blithely ignored some blatant homophobia -- Jay Leno's jabs come to mind, particularly one "joke" where he lisped in imitation of a San Francisco resident -- while seemingly spending all their energies on fundraising and partying.

i have been bitching about this for years......only to get
blacklisted for doing so. i find it ironic that above this posting is one of a performer from "noah's arc" who speaks of a moratorium on gay roles. he does not want to discuss his sexuality.

NOAH'S ARC was scheduled to recieve an award at last years awards. The producers of the show requested it.
GLAAD gladly complied as LOGO produces the show.
However NOAH'S ARC was pissed off when they found out that the award would not be presented on television and therefore declined.

so for GLAAD to say they do not give awards to shows from gay media outlets.

it is very understandable that people are unwilling to speak up against this because, GLAAD is affiliated with LOGO who is affiliated with VIACOM who spends millions on ad space in varous gay publications and web sites.

perhaps i have had a major mental time lapse, but i don't remember gay networks in 1999!!! if GLAAD remembers them, then perhaps they have been on too many ABSOLUTE VODKA tours.

on the plus side, i think that logo has made some great strides in the programming department. i now understand the reasoning behind their slow reveal.

GLAAD is sooo preoccupied with thinking they're Hollywood insiders and convincing the networks they actually represent the gay community (I don't remember voting) they became irrelevant years ago. I think the recent commotion at Grey's Anatomy really shows GLAAD for what it is - way too little, way too late.

Netflix has done more to nurture and encourage the growth of gay cinema and TV than GLAAD has ever done.

Here, here here! Battle on!!

GLAAD is absolutely useless.

If GLAAD won't award gay produced shows, does that mean they won't speak up against them if they are defamatory? Or is it just a one way street? Sounds kind of homophobic.

Maybe they'll come up with a "separate but equal" award for gays.
