Happy Endings: Ann Coulter on Al Gore: 'Total Fag'

Ann Coulter returns to a NBC network to call Al Gore "a total fag." (To be fair, she was joking. But she meant it about Bill Clinton being gay.) [Raw Story]

Lance Bass may be the most prominent teen pop star to come out, but her certainly isn't the first. [After Elton]

• Speaking of, if Lance Bass is in need of an online support group, he should turn to MTV's feedback forums. [MTV]

• HX scores an interview with Paris Hilton. What's left to conquer, Lance Bass? [HX]

• The justices responsible for this week's upholding of Washington's same-sex marriage ban explain themselves. A little. [Seattle Post-Intelligencer]

I think Ann Coulter needs to show what a patriot she is by going to Iraq to help out over there. She would do so much good over there. She could be the Mother Teresa of Tikrit. Go on, Ann. There's no danger there. Go show us what a good Christian conservative you are. Help Bush to spread democracy across Iraq, since as you Republicans keep saying, things are much better there now and it's really, really safe there now. Go on, Ann. Just do it.

And while there tell 'em what you said about Helen Thomas. And don't forget to offer the same Christmas greeting to them that you did last year... you know the one. The Moslems didn't mind that at all.

Marilyn says:

She was joking. It was a joke. She even said it was a joke. Liberals have no sense of humor when it comes to Ann Coulter. It's hysterical.

Why is okay for gays to throw the word fag around and joke about it, but if Ann Coulter does it, everyone gets their panties in a bunch?

If you don't like Ann, fine. Respond to her points. Don't just attack ehr by calling names, and don't resort to profanity. It shows a lack of class.

Ann doesn't really use profanity. Yes, she uses invective, but never without making an intellectual argument about an issue. Her critics tend to (perhaps deliberately) ignore her arguements and act as though all Ann does is call names, when, in fact, that's actually what most of her critics do: They call names (often laced with profanity) and never address anything she says on an intellectual level. They often quote her out of context, distort what she says, harp on mistakes Ann has made and accuse her of lying (a lie is when someone uses either print or speech to deliberately lead others to believe something that the liar knows to be untrue, making a factual error isn't a lie, deliberately spreading known factual errors is lying), or they insult her physical appearance.

I'm sorry, but for all of Ann's invective, she is nowhere near as offensive as most of her critics. The vitriolic profanity laden invective one can find in almost any blog that mentions her or anywhere where comments are allowed testify to what I am saying.

If you want to criticize her, please do, but keep it intellectual and respond to all of what she is actually saying (and make sure that you are not distorting her message). Responses like that would be much more impressive. I have yet to saee anything like it, though.

Jeff says:

Well, Marilyn, I guess you didn't watch the clip. A girl very calmly asked her if she thought her rhetoric overshadowed her message (which it does). All Coulter did was attack her question, imply that the girl believes we should be able to "suck the brains out of unborn babies" and call her "smarty pants." Ann Coulter isn't allowed to curse on national television because she'd be fined by the FCC, not because she's trying to keep her debating style clean and concise. That's what blogs are for -- speaking your mind. If you are laboring under the illusion that Ann Coulter is somehow an intellectual...I don't know. Please. She's a circus performer.

Nick says:

But Marilyn, Ann Coulter isn't even a GOOD debater. She makes pat, throwaway statements and then keeps repeating the same thing over and over again. Plus, she doesn't even do it professionally. Not that Chris Matthews is any kind of professional arguer, but she just keeps talking over him and getting all flustered and calling people names. I'm not at all conservative, but I'd have more respect for her if she could actually make a real argument. As it stands, it seems that her popularity stems mainly from the fact that she puts a blonde woman's face on the American (radical) right.

What was more shocking was the audience's reaction to Ann calling Al Gore "a total fag." That's proof enough that people need to be educated about the hateful and damaging nature of this slur.

And ignore Marilyn the Troll, she's been cutting and pasting the same comment (with the same typos) on numerous blogs.

Gary Green says:

Dismissing this as a joke is irresponsible on her part, this website's part and NBC's part. It is not ok to use the word "fag" on a news program to get a laugh. Chris Matthews should have called her on it immediately - "Why do you think it's funny to refer to someone as a fag? What if Al Gore really was a fag? Is that something we should laugh at, Ann?" Any follow-up question would have been great. Instead, he lets the odious, divisive witch get away with it. He is the one most at fault here, and the execs at NBC and GE should fire his unprofessional ass.
