Hate Crime Bill Gets New Name
Lawmakers Hope To Honor Matthew Shepard

shepfenceH.jpg
It's been nearly ten years since Matthew Shepard's senseless murder. Now, it seems that some good will finally come from the crime that shocked the nation. American lawmakers are set to reintroduce the ever-controversial federal hate crime bill, which has been renamed after the slain 21-year old.

The bill's been making the Washington rounds for nearly as long as Shepard's been dead, but came up against fierce opposition. The Democrats' big win in November, however, may help tip the scale in favor of justice. Lawmakers also hope that by adding Shepard's name, they'll also be able to add a face and, hopefully, garner some sympathy for a law many conservatives fear will impede their religious rights.

Family Research Council has come out against what they erroneously call the "thought crimes law". Shephard's mother, Judy, however, insists the law will not hinder anyone's religious expression and serves as the best memorial for her son:

I can't think of a better way to honor Matthew's memory. He was a 21-year-old college student just living his life. This act is about the prosecution of crime, not prohibition of speech. Unless they believe part of their religion is the practice of violence against others, they should not be affected by this bill.
Here's to hoping conservative politicians agree. Then, maybe, Shepard can finally be put to rest.

I am so glad to see that something is finally going to come from this! There is not a day that goes by that I dont think of Matthew and his family. I have been fighting within my own comunity for somethnig to be done and now I can say that our law makers are finally doing something to make if safer for us to live a life where we no longer have to look over our shoulders. We are finally stepping in the right direction!

I am very happy to hear that the hate bill would be named after Mathew. I understand that Mathews Mom is working with Cyndi Lauper on the True colors tour. It would be an honor to meet her and Cyndi at the same time! Both are true crusaders and great friends of our community!

Does anyone know the actual Senate Bill Number? House Bill is H.R. 1592, can't find the Senate one.
