Gay Men Hope Lady Drug Will Save Asses
Preventing Anal Cancer with HPV Vaccine?

syringeH.jpg
The HPV vaccine is possibly one of the most controversial medical advancements in recent history. Lawmakers all across the country are debating whether or not to require girls to get it and, if so, at what age. For those of you unfamiliar, the vaccine protects women against the human papilloma virus: a sexually transmitted disease that can lead to cervical cancer. Some gay men, however, are hoping it will help protect against anal cancer.

That's right: anal cancer. It may sound a bit funny, but this is no laughing matter. Jason Riggs from the Stop AIDS project says:

The prevalence of anal cancer among gay and bisexual men is very high. So that's why some people are looking at this as a possible preventive cure for anal cancer and HPV that causes anal cancer.
San Francisco's CBS affiliate goes on to say explain:
Anal cancer in gay and bisexual men happens at a rate 35 times higher than that of the general population. It's even higher among those who are infected with HIV.
Scary shit. Literally.

While no one knows whether the HPV virus will help men, it's better safe than sorry, right? Unless, of course, there's some horrible side effect and your penis falls off.

As far as I know, there is no medical reason men can't take Gardasil, and I've always found it problematic that it was only being made available to women. It's pretty expensive, and the assumption is made that HPV is pretty harmless for most men (you have to get it from being penetrated to be at risk for anal cancer), but it's very good to see that the medical community is reexamining the necessity for vaccinating men.

As a transman who still has a cervix (and yes, I have sex with men), I am really happy that Gardasil exists. I did, of course, have to pay 300 clams for it. Hopefully insurance companies will start picking up the tab soon (and it will be made available to lower-income and homeless folks)--this stuff is important!

Well its not completely stupid to not promote the vaccine for men, although I wish I could get it and count on its protection. The truth of the matter is that men and women have different biology. The vaccine for Herpes is showing good results in women trials right now, but no statistical significance in men. Gardasil could possibly be the same, we just can't know until more studies are done. More than likely it will work for us, but maybe not as well. How many people want to pay $300 for a 10% resistance. Its just a matter of collecting the data. We can however, criticize Merck for not having made collecting this data available a priority in the first place. I guess men's health just isn't as profitable in this situation as women's health. That is the only thing that matters to them.

F.Y.I.
men can catch HPV in A hole from any form of skin contact with an infected area... or a finger that has recently touched said infected area... I know, that's how I got it.
Oh, and P.S. it frikkin sucks, so if the vaccine can work for men, i suggest you get it. If they had a vaccine i could take now that would 100% block me from passing it on, I'd do it in a second.

right now, the hpv vaccine isn't being administered to men because it hasn't been approved by the fda. they're working on that, and hopefully everyone will be getting vaccinated. besides the risk of men getting anal cancer, it's pretty ridiculous to have just girls getting vaccinated, since where are they going to be getting infected but by the men who carry the disease? N says:

Absolutely, MD. Especially because--correct me if I'm wrong--HPV is really hard to detect in asymptomatic people (which includes the majority of infected men). So vaccinating men would be a great step forward in slowing the spread of this disease.

Hopefully the FDA will draw their conclusion soon.
