Holy Motherfucker! HRC's So Rich!
It Ain't Even Funny...

shockedmonkey.jpg
Maybe we should go into the non-profit business. After being skewered by Andrew Sullivan, Human Rights Campaign has released some of its spending records and, quite frankly, they're pretty astonishing.

For example, the nation's "largest" gay organization is spending a whopping $26.4 million on their new DC HQ, while former executive director, Cheryl Jacques, who quit in November 2004 after only eleven months on the job, received nearly $160,000 last year. So what gives? We can't say, because HRC finance VP Jim Rinefierd ain't talking.

He does explain, however, that the group helped finance their startlingly pricey home base with bridge loans and will also be charging other tenants rent.

Well, that's a relief!

(PS: Compare this picture to our picture of Hillary Clinton. Notice any similarities?)

that's why large non profits are a waste and its better to give to smaller local orgs. less waste. they say orgs like hrc spend less than 50 percent of donations on actual cause issues.

If you're gonna give to a national organization, give to
1) the Task Force
2) Lambda Legal Defense
3) The Victory Fund

And I would recommend giving to a local org before any of these...happily for me, The Williams Institute at UCLA Law School and Equality California, ARE local.

"HRC" = "Has Rolls of Cash"

I know exactly where those numbers came from - Charity Navigator. Working for a non-profit as a fundraiser, I have to say $26M on a building in Washington DC is PRETTY DAMN CHEAP, considering what most of us pay in rent. As for 50% of the money reflected paying for the building, that is just the Foundation side - what is reported by Charity Navigator. Any time you have a capital expense against a foundation, over a period of several years, you do take a hit to how it looks the Foundation money is used (hence the 50% cost of fundraising). I would actually say HRC got a bargain relative to prices in the market and in the long term have a bigger investment and revenue stream than most non profits in the area.

That doesn't mean I'm a big fan - I'm just saying you do have to look at things in perspective.

Here's a visual for the sake of my comments:

(I think everone ought to link to it!!)

This is what I just simply cannot understand - having voluteered myself working with several local oragnzations -Why people give money to large organizations similar to HRC and ignore local or private "suffrage" per example: This past week the government of Poland, Yes, I know but hey they are "Club West" members by the grace of god. Nonetheless gays appear cynical in supporting smaller organizations and or individuals. This week we took part in histroy as Arte TV (A German/French Cable TV program, I believe it's also on cable satteside.) visited Poland and composed an interview with Polish gay pride founders and activist Szymon Niemiec. Szymon has an autobiography to be released late Spring , " A Rainbow Hummingbird On My Butt." Arte TV interviewed him about his activitism, politics in Poland and accompanied him to a Polish Drag Queen Show. It is important to note that the producer of the Arte TV isn't gay nor any member of the production crew that arranged the interview several months ago. I submit this fact because very few "gay blogs" have reported on Szymon or teh Polish struggle even with CNN, CBS Oprah and Arte appear to have more compassion for the Polsih gay plight than the ineternational "community" itself. The gay "communities" should ban togetehr fighting discrimination and homophobia GLOBALLY, at least in my opinion in our own back yards - which Poland is as a member of the European Union - which does not permit member states to disrciminate against gays. What I also don't understand is why the EU dosen't sanction the seated Polish government - perhaps its has something to do with the fact that Poland's membership and other Eastern Euroepan nations were only considered and advanced because of influence by the United States of America. In any case the struggle continues and we must all be constantly reminded that at some time, some place, someone sacraficed so that we may chase the local "fresh meat on the blocks."

I agree they should not lie about members numbers.
But you don't know about non profit executive salaries. 160K is very normal, to run a big non profit, even a medium size one.
26 mil to spend on a HQ in DC, also normal.
Do some research before shaking your finger.
