"Oh, Robocop, Don't Be Lifting My Shirt," Sez Julia Child
Or, How Would You Like Your Homophobia?

juliarobocop.jpg
Chance are you've heard, seen or read one of Julia Child's recipes. The British chef established herself a foodie mainstay with the 1961 publication of her famed French guidebook, Mastering The Art of French Cooking.

From then until her 2004 death, Child helped hordes of hapless chefs prepare the meals of their dreams. Or, at least, meals that didn't cause nightmares. A Boston article, however, wonders about her unappetizing homophobia. Laura Shapiro writes:

...She found homosexuality outlandish—not immoral, and certainly not to be criminalized, but a rude disruption in the natural order of things... She often used the term pedal or pedalo—French slang for a homosexual—draping it with condescension, pity, and disapproval... Fashion designers were “that little bunch of Pansies,” a cooking school was “a nest of homovipers,” a Boston dinner party was “peopled by 3 fags in an expensive house…. We felt hopelessly square and left when decently possible,” and San Francisco was beautiful but full of pedals—“It appears that SF is their favorite city! I’m tired of them, talented though they are.”
The article goes on to suggest Child didn't necessarily disapprove of all gay men, but wagged her finger at the more fey of the faggots. Certainly not surprising considering Child's birth preceded Christ's, but still pretty distasteful.

(PS: How random is that picture of Child with a fake Robocop?)

Just a Pinch of Prejudice [Boston]

Julia Child is no product of Britian. She was born and raised in California.

She might be surprised to learn she was one of my early indications of budding faggotry. When I was a kid, I used to love watching her first cooking show. I was a farm boy in Georgia who longed to prepare and eat foie gras and confit de canard. By the time I was in high school I was following her instructions for coq au vin. My grandparents with whom I lived were perplexed. I thank my grandmother for my ability to make a good pie crust from scratch.

I suppose love of cooking also led to my brief involvement with the husband of a local foodie who had her own local cooking show; however, her cooking was more interesting than her husband.

as a slight corrective: a friend of mine was a pr person in minneapolis in the late 80s when julia came thru town promoting her latest show. according to my friend, julia got off the plane, said "i need a drink" and asked to be taken to the nearest gay bar...not exactly what you would expect from a homophobe...

Hm. That is strange Pete. Now I dont' know what to believe.

If the article is true, then I'm done with her and any products or promotions etc from her.

If it's not true, well I guess I'll continue to respect her memory.

Every single comment could have been taken out of context and wouold not necessarily have been meant as homophobic per se. Christ, everyone at odd moments says something dishy! NOthing like attacking a person long after they're six feet under. Real sporting of Laura Shapiro, without any corroborating evidence. this is BULLSHIT

I believe that she settled an anti gay discrimination suit by the man who was next in line to head her organization. I'm pretty sure, but not 100% on the deatails.

This totally reminds me of that whole Carol Channing being homophobic thing a while back... But Child is dead... What difference does it make now? In my experiences, most straight people from her generation were pretty homophobic anyway.
