In what can only be described as the oddest of coincidences, we received a heads-up from Mr. NewNowNext himself—John Polly—only moments after posting about the disconnect between Logo and GLAAD's spin on Jennifer Aniston's still-unresolved "Vanguard Award." The bad news is that we're still trying to get to the bottom of it; the good news is that MTV Canada follows the traditional dictionary definition of "vanguard" to the letter in a hilarious PSA that, naturally, has no chance in hell of ever making it to broadcast airwaves in the U.S.
Thankfully, John hooks you up with all the linkage you'll need to see every public-servicing minute!
That PSA could only be made in Canada... the only judgement being made was that the two guys are brothers. Three cheers for Canada.
i LOVE the "aren't you guys... brothers?"
but what sealed it was the "if you're high, just make sure you don't drive"...
wtf! omg! I don't know whether to heave or wham wham. They should get an MTV award for best kiss though.
I have really mixed feelings about this.
1) I agree it should get hottest kiss
2) The thing reeks of "if you smoke pot, the awful consequence is you'll kiss another guy" and that really pisses me off - I'm sick and tired of ads playing off homophobia for the gimmick of their message
3) the brother line is funny and I like that that is the only reaction, but the meta-message is still #2.
I agree with BeeDee, the message seems to be saying that if you use drugs, you'll partake of terrible things like homosexuality, or incest. Lumping homosexuality with incest as a "warning" is no different that comparing homosexuality to beastiality, or pedophilia.
Just because it says Canada at the end, doesn't take away from the fact that this is a conservative owned American network ridiculing gays on Canadian soil, the way they could never get away with in the US. Why two men, rather than two women? Because boys kissing are suppose to be gross
Paul & BeeDee:
Maybe the ad's playing off of the fact that someone (i.e. you) are likely to read far too much into it and be a wee bit closed-minded about the fact that not EVERYTHING that has a comedic spin two same-sex people kissing is meant to be degrading of gay people.
Maybe.
damien, maybe you're giving too much credit to MTV and working a bit too hard to justify anti-gay attitudes. Again, why wasn't the ad with two "sisters" kissing? Because that would not be viewed as "gross", but rather "hot" by MTV Canada's predominately male audience. The only thing this add is "playing off of" is linking homosexuality with incest. James Dobson would be proud.
