Who'd have thought 15 years ago that Al Sharpton—that guy in the jogging suit always hanging around Jesse Jackson—would have become a civil rights power broker responsible for taking radio veteran Don Imus off of broadcast airwaves? Well, he is now. Al got serious—and he got rid of those jogging suits. He stood up and presented himself to the public and to politicians as someone to be taken seriously.
That's essentially the thesis of an opinion piece porn star Michael Lucas has in this week's New York Blade, comparing Sharpton's response to Imus with our community's lack thereof in light of Ann Coulter's terming Democratic Presidential candidate John Edwards a "faggot":
Imagine if a prominent person made an anti-black remark in front of a televised political conference. What would you think if you heard Al Sharpton say that the network had a responsibility to “consider” taking the person off the air? You would think Sharpton had suddenly turned into a wimp, and you would be right!
When Gays Don't Attack [New York Blade]
Michael Lucas got it dead on correct.....
where has been all the outrage in our community with the
homophobic comments that only get laughter and general
acceptance as being ok to say or when the comments are
made, it is generally acceptable and deemed matter of fact
that no one does what Sharpton did...Indeed, where was
Sharpton during the Isiaah Washington comment? No where
to be found and certainly not expressing outrage and demanding
that Washington be fired from Grey's Anatomy.
Where is the outrage at Clinton and Obama's silence in response
to Peter Pace's comments..when they were asked about his
comments they said nothing..
Unless we stand up for ourselves..no one will.
Lucas got it right....its a shame our so called leaders in the
GLBT community don't get it at all...
Larry Kramer got it right when he expressed outrage that
there is real hatred against our community...our GLBT leadership
did what it always does...instead of organizing and listening to
Larry Kramer's call to arms....they do nothing....except build
glass buildings like HRC..take our money and do nothing and
stand in line at the back of the bus and accept crumbs and
wait until next year requests from Democratic leaders.
We need to stand up and be counted and scream we are mad
as hell and not going to take it any more..and then really get
organized and do something to stop the homophobia and
keep going until we get full constitutional rights..
thank you michael lucas.
thank you new york blade for having the balls (and in michael case the penis to go with them) to write and publish such an article.
i can not begin to tell you the shit mail i get for speaking out against the HRC from my tiny little voice.
i also agree with poster Michael that Al Sharpton should be called out on his lack of response on Issaiah Washington especially when he gets a NAACP award.
so we know the problem.
what is the solution mr. lucas?
how do we organize Gays w/ Balls?

The only problem is, white people will back up the black community when this happens. However, the straight community will rarely, if ever back us up when something like the Coulter debacle happens.
I've heard many a straights trash a right-winger for being anti-gay, but will balk at making the same accusation at a liberal. That is the problem; straight people talk a good game, but will not walk the walk. When I pointed out Clinton's anti-gay remark at calling conservative Feinstein "self-loathing", I was dogpiled on liberal baords and told to vote conservative and see what it gets me. The howls were outrageous when I pointed out She-Clinton's hypocrisy in praising DOMA as saving gays from a constitutional ban, while refusing to support ssm.
Straight liberals, like straight conservatives, are only interested in using us as political fodder for elections. Otherwise we are 5% of the population and just don't matter to them. If Bush announced a constitutional ban on interracial marrige, do you think for one minute any white lib would do nothing, the way they have done nothing about the ban on ssm?
We have to fight the right and too many on the left. The funny thing is, when you piss off a progressive, their rhetoric is just as angry and homophobic as any on the right. It was sad to read progressive boards and blogs where Ann Coulter was demonized for calling Edwards a "faggot", and read straight posters comments calling Matt Sanchez was called a "fag" repeatedly. How are they any different than Coulter? The only diff was, Edwards is a Democrat.
Until we destroy the myth that is Clinton, straight libs and progressives will never get on board and help us in out fights. If it's ok for their hero to be anti-gay, the don't see any harm in following suit
Look, Ann Coulter doesn't need any more attention, 'kay? She's laughable and most of the rational world agrees.
Additionally, Michael Lucas doesn't need any more attention, 'kay? He's laughable and most of the rational worlds agrees. To sum up: Let's ignore Ann Coulter and more importantly, let's PLEASE ignore Michael Lucas. At least until he agrees to cut it out with that intolerable pouting.
lucas is right in saying the gay community needs to attack homophobic bigotry. our model, though, should be the anti-defemation league that doesn't let an anti-semetic remark slip through rather than that clown sharpton.
the big difference in this case is the target. politicians and entertainers are fair game, not sympathetic targets. if everyone got fired who said something nasty about hillary, unemployment would rise 25%.
sharpton could make a case that some plucky, sympathetic, striving women were being attacked and get the bum fired. imus hit a target that wasn't fair game.
White people will back up the black community? Really?
I don't believe that for a second. Unfortunately, we still have serious issues with "stealth" racism that hasn't been truly addressed in this country.
Sure, some white folks will pretend, in a condescending sort of way, to understand the concerns of the black community. They will say nothing disparaging in public because they're politically correct. But there's a huge difference between that and their actual feelings towards black people.
They change their tune very quickly when they're in private, within an all-white group, and after a couple of beers. Just because nobody starts a press conference by yelling "keep America white!" into the microphone anymore doesn't mean everything's hunky dory with race relations.
