Afternoon Aural: Herman's Hermits
All Over The World and Shit

We can't tell if "There's Kind of Hush" by Herman's Hermits really deserves the title "love song". It's also a simple statement of fact.

Sure, the verse discusses two isolated lovers, one of whom can only hear Peter Noone's sensual crooning. But then there's that titular, choral "hush". It doesn't make sense. Maybe the Hermits are referencing some international orgy happening or something. It was, after all, the 60's.

That would require loads of planning, though. Everyone would have to know that one day out 365 (or 366, depending on the year) had been designated a universal "love day". A pretty big feat. We're not sure the long-haired hippies could pull it off.

You know who can? You. Or, Hallmark. We're not sure.

There's a kind of hush all over the world tonight All over the world you can hear the sounds of lovers in love You know what I mean

Just the two of us and nobody else in sight
There's nobody else and I'm feeling good just holding you tight

So listen very carefully
Closer now and you will see what I mean
It isn't a dream

The only sound that you will hear
Is when I whisper in your ear
"I love you forever and ever"

There's a kind of hush all over the world tonight
All over the world you can hear the sounds of lovers in love

Lalala...

So listen very carefully
Closer now and you will see what I mean
It isn't a dream

The only sound that you will hear
Is when I whisper in your ear
"I love you forever and ever"

There's a kind of hush all over the world tonight
All over the world people just like us are fallin' in love

They're fallin' in love
They're fallin' in love

There IS one song even more appropriate for Valentine's Day listening, though... This clip from "The History Boys" in which a young gay man serenades the fellow he has a crush on in his classroom. "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered" never sounded so good... Go to:

All my fellow Deerhoof-lovin' 'mos should check out the band's cover of this song. I've got a copy up for download on my blog. Yay, Deerhoof! I dunno about Peter Noone though.
