The first thing that should come to mind when thinking of gay rock music shouldn’t be a high-pitched Freddie Mercury wearing a tight low cut v-neck. No, it should be queercore. If you don't know what it is, don't worry, honey, that's what we're here for.

Rising out of the 80's punk scene, queercore music can best be described as socially conscience hardcore rock with oodles of gay tendencies. This isn't light and fluffy "Ray of Light" stuff. Queercore band names include Limp Wrist, Mas Scara, and Super 8 Cumshot. Apparently Hilton Cumshot was already taken. Our favorite queercore band, Pansy Division, has been around since the beginning of the movement. We're crossing our fingers that their catchy song, "Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other" ends up as Brokeback Mountain's theme song.

Not yet mainstream, queercore is quickly gaining in popularity all over the globe with festivals like Homo-a-go-go which takes place at the home of alternative rock, Washington State. There's also a new book out chronicling its history, simply titled Homocore. You just know the gay rock scene has a colorful history.
