Musical Notes: Doris Day

snipshot_1h29rp8ef0.jpg

So often in this space we take a look at new or up-coming musical contributors, but today we're going to take a look back to a simpler time, a simpler sound. Before J. Lo or LiLo dominated the stage and screen, there was another diva on the scene: Doris Day. Just look at her. That hair! Those teeth! That lily-white reflection of a twisted American dream! Sure, such perfection is a bit sickening, but we don't hold it against her.

Not only does she sing like an angel, bringing Serenade in Blue to ethereal, heavenly heights, but may have been a fag hag before such a thing even existed. She appeared in a number of movies with everyone's favorite by-gone hunk: Rock Hudson. The first, Pillow Talk, actually earned Doris her first and (tragically) only Oscar nod. Another favorite: The Thrill of It All with a young, and positively delicious, James Garner.

If you're feeling low today, do yourself a little favor and throw on a little double-D. People may make fun, but just know that we've got your back. And we've got it good...

Well, since you guys brought up the subject, I just watched one of DD's lesser known movies last night, "Julie". She did have a lovely, clear as a bell voice, but I could never tell anyone else this....

I'm a gay male but think Doris is extremely sexy and that voice can indeed send chills. Her intonation, tone, breath control and easy phrasing can turn even a song like "Let it Snow" into something very special. She could sing dance and play comedy, drama, suspense or even appear in a western with an ease that is amazing.

Doris Day is so terribly underrated. She was a wonderful actress, great singer, comedienne extraordinaire, and a damned good dancer to boot! It's no wonder she ruled the movie box offices in the 50s and 60s in addition to being a best-selling recording star! There'll never be another like Dodo!

Mr Jarvis says:

Oh dear girl,..Doris made the Day, but I'm so worried for her, financially. I just heard she put up her Berverly Hills home for sale and that the Humaine Society has taken over her Animal League. I do hope everything is OK. Since Terry, her son, died a couple years ago I 've wondered how she's getting along.
