Are They Fucking Kidding?

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation is launching an ad campaign against Pfizer's Viagra, insisting that the company condones recreational use of the erection-sustaining blue pill. A spokeswoman for the foundation, Lori Yeghiayan, says the company's marketing suggests people use viagra for recreational use, rather than for purely medical necessity.

The ads show a picture of a prescription pad which contains the message that Viagra combined with crystal methamphetamine creates a prescription for HIV infection. It says that crystal methamphetamine makes it difficult to get and keep an erection, but Viagra makes it possible to maintain an erection while on the illegal drug.

This is preposterous. If you can't use Viagra for recreational purposes, what the fuck's the point? It's not like you need an erection to help you get shit done...unless getting shit done involves lots of fucking.

Seriously, the tweakers will just take another hard-on drug to keep it up, so to speak. And, besides, shouldn't the AIDS Healthcare Foundation put more time (and money) into anti-meth campaigns than trying to screw around with a huge corporation.

Does anyone else think that this is about the stupidest thing in the world? Time after time activists step forward and make matters worse for the gay community. This is an example of the counterproductive fear-mongering and promotion of the lack of personal responsibility that we DON’T need.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there is something called individual accountability. Every time an AIDS activist organization goes on a rampage about the dangers of drugs and sex, the numbers of those affected go up. Someone should take a hint.

If something isn’t working, try the opposite. This broken record is getting old and it’s killing more people than it’s saving. Here’s an idea… stop blaming other people, stop trying to put your shortcomings on someone else’s shoulders, and take personal responsibility for your actions.

There was one AIDS campaign that said “HIV stops with me” and it had pictures of guys with condoms. THAT was a positive way to go – that was the appropriate campaign that was not only respectful, but true, honest, and wasn’t filled with fear or lies. Personal responsibility…

These campaigns (like the one against Pfizer) that make the assumption that all HIV/AIDS patients got their infection via Viagra and crystal meth is not only offensive, it is actually causing the already horrid number of those infected to go up. Too many people will look at the campaign and say those awful words, “that didn’t happen to me,” and they will tell the person next to them.

Thanks for helping the gay community walk backwards.
