Americans have long been known for their determination, perhaps one of our more endearing qualities. That is, until said determination devolves into desperation, as it seems is the case with Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
You may recall that the Massachusetts state legislature voted 109-87 for a recess before they could vote on a state-wide referendum on gay-marriage. Romney and his homies had collected 170,000 signatures from voters who opposed gay marriage, urging lawmakers to revisit the Supreme Court ruling of 2003 that legalized same-sex marriage.
Like a good American, Romney simply won't be deterred, bringing persistence to ear-splitting levels. Standing in front of a hyperbolic American flag, he once again called for a legislative vote on homo-nups. The Boston Herald quotes him as saying:
Let us not see this state, which first established constitutional democracy, become the first to abandon it...Legislators so energized to protect the newly discovered gay right to marry had no compunction about trammeling the long-established constitutional right of the people to vote.
To be fair, ol' Mitten's got a point: if the state's going to posture democratic, they should probably have a vote. Although, we can't help but wonder if Romney actually cares about the vote. As you know, he's been named as a possible GOP candidate for the 2008 Presidential elections, alongside Senator John McCain and former-NYC mayor, Rudy Guiliani.
Is it possible Romney's anti-gay stance is just a political ploy to earn conservative favor? While we've no doubt Romney ain't keen on the homos, it's not out of the realm of possibility that he's exploiting the issue for political gain.
Considering Ben Adler's piece questioning the potency of gay-marriage, however, perhaps Romney should switch gears. Because, uite frankly, we're getting a little bored of his anti-homo shenanigans.
