It's no secret the Nigerian government's not keen on the gays: they've already got laws prohibiting gay sex. The country's legislature, however, is considering upping the homo-hating ante with a law barring any gay association.
The New York Blade reports:
The proposal under debate in Nigeria's House of Representatives would outlaw not just gay marriages, but any form of association between gay people, social or otherwise, and publication of any materials deemed to promote a "same-sex amorous relationship."The move would further entrench national homophobia, a sentiment exhibited most readily when Archbishop Peter Akinola (pictured) cut ties with America's Episcopal church over openly gay Bishop Gene Robinson's 2003 officiation.
Though politicians hope to write discrimination into the constitution, human rights lawyer Akin Marinho says they could never pass because they violate the country's free speech laws. Because constitutionality matters when trying to establish hate-filled laws.
Nigeria.... what a hellhole.
Hey... they have oil. Maybe we should invade? (lol)
Seriously, tho... Nigeria has LOTS of problems to deal with, the least of which is meddling in the lives of gay and lesbian Nigerians. There is an ongoing war between Muslims and Christians as well as major humanitarian needs. They should be building roads and bridges, not policing the love lives of their people.
