Oregon's one step closer to domestic partnership rights. The House voted yesterday that same-sex couples (among others) deserve many of the same rights as straight married couples. Speaking on the historic win, Basic Rights Oregon's Aisling Coghlan remarked:
Today is without question a monumental day for not only Oregon, but for our nation. Oregonians know too well the value of being able to protect our families--and this bill directly reflects that deeply held pro-family belief. Basic Rights Oregon applauds the Senators who voted in favor of basic fairness for all Oregon families, a value very much in step with the majority of Oregonians. We should all be proud of this historic day.Of course, the real celebration comes when Governor Ted Kulongoski signs his name, thus officiating House Bill 2007's legal status. Although, Kulongoski has already pledged to give up his John Hancock on this and an anti-discrimination bill.

House Bill 2007 is not simply another piece of legislation, but a moral call that both the Senate and House have strongly answered and the Governor has pledged to meet.

Congratulations, Oregon. We knew you could do it. (pause)
OK, *I* did, the rest of them called you "rednecks", but lets not dwell on the past.
With Kulongoski's signature, Oregon will become the last of the three West Coast states to have recognized same-sex unions and anti-discrimination legislation. The West Coast will join New England as one of the most legally progressive regions on the issue of homosexuality.
Now, comes the hard part, making some headway in the dreaded "JesusLand"
It was actually the Senate, who passed it 21-9 (after passing it 19-11 two years ago). The House had already passed it earlier, by a much smaller margin, although 2 years ago the GOP wouldn't even let it come up for a hearing.
So yeah, great news. Ted's signature is a foregone conclusion; I'm celebrating now.
it's a positive step in that it shows that attitudes are changing, but i hope oregonians aren't lulled into giving up the fight. "domestic partners" is still a far cry from equal marriage rights. .. that goes for you too, california !
