Nature loving lesbian, Tree made it her life's work to ensure that women had a place to call their own. Born on December 2, 1927, in Detroit Michigan, Tree first garnered attention back in 1981 when she and then-partner Dorothy Osbold founded Swiftwaters: a retreat for women.
Following Osbold's death, Tree found love once again with Pat Roberts, with whom she ran the camp for the last fifteen years. Roberts sat with Tree in an Atlanta hospital for eleven days until Tree finally succumbed to complications from emphysema and congestive heart failure at about 6:30am on New Year's Eve. Of Tree's death, Roberts said:
Right now there is an ache. She’s going to be missed by a lot of women, and some men, but by mostly women... She had a quiet strength about her.Rather than clogging her house with flowers, Roberts asks that people make a donation to the Joyce Tree Memorial Fund at any BB&T Bank.
