As Matthew Bank washes the blood from his manicured hands, religious leaders from South Africa's Eastern Cape Council of Churches are rolling up their sleeves for a battle of their own. It seems a number of the holy men and women object to ECCC President Mcebisi Xundu support for same-sex marriage.
Back in December, as the High Court's deadline for constitutional change loomed, Xundu controversially stated: "there is no scriptural verse that denies same-sex couples marriage". Since then, a number of have 32 churches have quit the ECCC and the remaining bunch are calling for Xundu's dismissal, South Africa's The Sunday Times reports.
Pastor Mtunzi Fipaza, deputy chairperson of the Butterworth Council of Churches, said all 15 ministers in his district vehemently opposed same-sex marriages. "I don’t think our president is speaking for the Council of Churches, but for himself," he said.In calling for his head, church leaders hope to realign the ECCC with so-called Biblical correctness, rather than political correctness. If they're trying to be so Biblically correct, why not stop getting so wrapped up in the politics of it all and start practicing what you preach? He added that had the leadership of the ECCC polled its members they would have found that most were against the Civil Unions Act.
Fipaza called for the ECCC leader to be replaced to enable the body to reflect the views of its members.
