No kids, no pets, no gays? That's apparently Affordable Suites of America's policy. Or, according to Darren Black Bear and Jason Pickel: two gay men who tried to rent a room, but were told, quite bluntly, "We don't rent to gay people".
Searching for a new home, the boys hoped for a short-term stay while getting settled. When they revealed they were gay, a hotel employee allegedly said: "Oh we don't rent to multiple people of the same sex... No, we don't rent to gay people at all." Picking up the story, reporters from South Carolina's WLTX got all investigative and shit:
News19 contacted the hotel, posing as a potential renter, and inquired about two men staying in the same room. The receptionist who answered the phone told us the following: “Our policy is we don’t rent to two people of the same sex if we only have one bed.” “Is that your policy,” we asked. “That’s corporate policy because they only have one sleeping area.” We then asked, “Okay, but they can't share the bed?” "I suppose they could, but most men don’t want to," she said. The hotel's Carroll Atkisson claims there's no such ban, they simply don't like renting double beds to multiple singles. (That's the weakest excuse in history, but okay...)
Despite Atkisson's claims that Black Bear and Pickel (um...) are welcome, the men plan to pursue legal action. Unfortunately, there's no South Carolina law against discriminating against nancies.
See, kids, this is why you don't stay at places called "Affordable Suites". Shell out the extra five bones and stay at a Holiday Inn or something...
Couple: Hotel Wouldn't Rent to Us Because We're Gay [WLTX]
Here here! I stay at Holiday Inn Express all the time. They are generally newer, have a Kohler shower heads (which I love), and give you free breakfast. To hell with their double talk!
