The Gays Protest Across New York State

marriage-protest-nyc.jpg

In response to the surprising ruling yesterday by the New York State Court of Appeals to uphold the state's ban on gay marriage, thousands of protestors made their voices heard in New York City, Albany, Rochester, and other cities across New York State.

In the ruling, the Court of Appeals described homosexuality as a "preference," harkening back to a day that we don't even remember at this point. There was also a phrase in the ruling that said, "Heterosexual intercourse has a natural tendency to lead to the birth of children; homosexual intercourse does not." That may be true, but in fact has nothing to do with marriage rights.

We are heartened to see the demonstrations, but still feel that it's a sad day to be a New Yorker.

Matt says:

On the same day that the New York Supreme Court had their ruling, GA's Supreme Court reversed a lower court decision on the Gay Marriage Ammendment. It was a sad day here, ecspecially since Atlanta has one of the largest gay populations in the South and not one protest or rally was held.

I have to ask: "So what if it IS a preference?". This "oh, The Gays, they can't help it. They're just born 'that way'" frankly annoys the fuck outta me.

midwestern transport says:

yeah, it was really disheartening. i found the decision really frustrating, because it basically argued that a) heterosexual couples needed marriage as an incentive to provide a stable home for the possible children that could result from het sex and b) that children needed to have both a mother and father in the home, or rather, a "living woman" and "living man" or some such tripe.

what crap.
