By now we've established that much of the world ain't down with the homo struggle. Of the least gay-friendly regions, the Caribbean ranks as one of the most notorious. And, of the Caribbean nations, Jamaica's got one of the worst raps.
Over the past few years there've been a string of anti-gay murders, perhaps most notably the killing of LGTB activist Brian Williamson. But how many of these crimes are actually anti-gay? According to a controversial piece in The Jamaica Observer, not as many as one would think.
The piece revolves around an anonymous man who claims growing up in boys' shelters turned him - and innumerable other Jamaican men - gay. In the testosterone fueled enviornment, he says, he became "mesmerized with the situation of men" - a captivation that led him down the cum-soaked path of cock sucking. Despite the alleged constructionist influences, the man insists he would never be straight. "I just have a passion for guys," he tells the paper. The passion's so intense, he says, that he's considering hiring someone to kill his ex-boyfriend. These crimes of passion, the report claims, are the real reason so many gay men wake-up dead in the morning.
Let me tell you something, all the violence of the number of gay men who have been killed in the last two to three years has not taken place because of hate crime. It's passionate crime, a jealous situation.
Of course, the report doesn't sit well with human rights organizations and individual activists. Richard from Proceed at Your Own Risk - from whom we received this article - writes, "...As it turns out Jamaica would be a perfectly safe place for gay men if not for gay men." While there's no way to know exactly how much of this report springs from fact (not least of all if the anonymous tipter is actually gay), it provides the perfect excuse to murder gay men.
"Murder Them before They murder Eachother" rings too close to "Preumptive Strike" for my taste. Shame on Jamacan Homophobes.
