Maybe the Brits didn't get the memo, but Nigeria's not down with fags. In fact, the governments moving to ban anything even the least bit gay. Despite a possible death sentence for his man-on-man loving ways, Emmanuel Obahiaghbon's been sent back to the African Nation.
Obahiaghbon first arrived in England back in November of 2005 following years of abuse at the hands of his family, peers and police. The most horrific of these events came during his studies, when Obahiaghbon was gang-raped twice. When he went to police, they accused him of being an occultist.
Once in England, Obahiaghbon hoped to find a safe space. Immigration officials, however, were having none of it and denied him asylum. UK Gay News reports:
Mr Obahiaghbon had claimed asylum on the grounds of persecution because of his homosexuality. A psychiatrist had visited him in detention and confirmed that he had symptoms of trauma consistent with having suffered physical and sexual violence. The government, however, dismissed these documents as forgeries and denied Obahiaghbon another go at freedom.Acting at Mr Obahiaghbon’s request, gay human rights group OutRage! had presented Home Office Immigration Minister, Liam Byrne MP, new evidence corroborating Emmanuel's claims of persecution – including a Nigerian police warrant for his arrest on charges of homosexuality and a solicitor’s letter stating that he was likely to be sentenced to death by stoning.
Homo-activist Peter Tatchell blames the Labour government, saying Obahiaghbon's deportation's part and parcel of their anti-immigrant policy. While we can't say for sure whether the entire party is at fault, it's pretty dreadful none-the-less.
Our advice for Obahiaghbon? Run as if your life depends on it - because, really, it does.
I feel sad for him.
Presenting forged documents will def not help his case. I wish our gov would crack down more on illegal aliens. I wish him the best and safety.
Actually, the guy did not present forged documents - they were genuine. It was the British Government who said they were forged - with the screaming Brit tabolids hating anyone foreign and seeking asylum, the politicians run scared and deported the guy without a court appeal hearing. As Tatchell says in the report, “He was given no chance to prove the genuineness of his new evidence. They bundled him onto a plane as fast as they could, to stop him from challenging their arbitrary dismissal of his letters from the Nigerian police and solicitor."
In the part of Nigeria where this guy lives, Islamic Sharia law is in force - and being known to be gay carries the DEATH sentence. Hopefully nothing will happen to this 20-year-old - but it the worse happens, then the British Government will have a lot to answer for and could well be hauled up in front of the European Court of Human Rights.
