Wisconsin AG Criticized For Clarifying Amendment

PegCapTimes1.jpg

If there's one thing that supporters of the proposed anti-marriage amendment in Wisconsin hate more than anything, it's information. An ignorant populace is one that can be easily manipulated at the polls, and Wisconsin Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager (pictured) has provided voters with a bit too much information for the liking of the religious right: basically a brief definition of what the amendment would actually do.

Amendment supporters are upset because they believe that policy should be voted upon based solely on the name of the initiative (e.g., the "Blue Skies Plan", the "Healthy Forests Initiative", "Mission: Accomplished"). They can't very well use the proposed "Happy Gays Amendment" title that they had been planning on now that Attorney General Lautenschlager has made it clear the proposed amendment could affect the domestic partnership rights of all unmarried Wisconsinites, gay or straight.

it is sad to say but that is exactly how voters are deciding on many of these amendments etc. they go in thinking they are 'protecting' marriage as between a man and woman, and they end up banning civil unions, domestic partnerships and multiple other things that the Christian Right has decided is equivalent to marriage. Its the most draconian laws on the books in some states because its not only preventing the state from recognizing the relationship, it is preventing the couple from even having contracts (or at least putting those contracts into question).

If the ammendment goes through, at least some (unmarried) straight couples will realize (to a certain extent) what it feels like to have their relationship go unrecognized by the law.

Certainly it's something I wouldn't wish upon anyone.
