Yet Another Evan. Comes Out
Stops Scandal Before It Starts

jesussaves.jpg
The Year of the Outing claims another gay victim: we hear from our friend Andy Towle that Reverend Paul Barnes of Colorado has admitted that he wants dick and, thus, can no longer lead his 2100-strong Evangelical church.

Though Barnes never used his position to rail against homosexuality, he did deliver a post-Ted Haggard sermon on the importance of integrity. He must have taken the message to heart, because he told his congregants via video tape that he has battled with his gay demons since childhood.

Wife Char at his side, Barnes said:

I have struggled with homosexuality since I was a 5-year-old boy ... I can't tell you the number of nights I have cried myself to sleep, begging God to take this away.
Barnes also recalled his father's only sexual advice: what to do if a "fag" approaches you for sex. While the Denver Post article doesn't share this advice, we're sure it wasn't pretty.

Despite finding the church at late in his teens, Barnes says he never quite conquered his homosexual desires. It seems he's been acting on them in secret. The Denver Post reports that an associate pastor named Dave Palmer got an anonymous call tipping him off about Barnes' gay ways.

Palmer met with Barnes, who confessed. At an emergency meeting Thursday, a board of elders accepted Barnes' resignation after he admitted "sexual infidelity," violating the church's code of conduct. Church leaders also must affirm annually that they are "living the moral and ethical teachings of Scripture in my public and private life."
Despite his life-long desires, Barnes won't admit that he was born gay. His time away will be spent looking for childhood influences that may have tainted his otherwise sinless body.

That's good. We really wouldn't want a religious leader to spread positive gay messages. Now that would be an abomination.

So apparently real men really do love Jesus--in that way! Haw!

Argh! When are these religous doinks, who purport to understand so much about prayer and God's wishes, finally get it: if you pray and pray and pray to God to take away your homo urges and the homo urges don't go away... that God MIGHT think you need to be gay and that being gay MIGHT be okay with God if God doesn't wipe you clean of it?!

Not to mention... he's not born gay? But felt that way at 5? Um... okay...

Better to admit before being purged. Kinda like confessing before being shot at dawn. It clears the soul with the same results. Go and play with other's wee-wees no more. Huh?
I'm a grown man using that word...hurry, purge me from the ranks of the sexually aware for using that word and drop me from my membership in "Manly Men of the Bushes."

You know, I'm 20 years old and I've been going to Grace Chapel for 18 years of my life and have been graced with having Paul as my pastor. I was there the day they showed the video and no one walked out. At least half the people were crying and the other half was obviously sad. But we don't think anything less of him. And I think it's horrible this is being compared to that guy from Colorado Springs! Paul wasn't accused by anyone, he said it himself. Plus if his wife Char can accept him, why can't we? Plus he NEVER admitted to having sexual relations or anything of the sort with anyone. Us all at Grace love, miss, and are praying for Paul.

Atheo says:

Barnes talked of being a confused little boy and a adolescent racked with self-loathing and guilt. And probably, this self-loathing lingers since then. If there is a Loving God, why he condemns so many people to live with this hatred. Such a God cannot exist, or rather must not exist.

As a Christian who is an ardent, straight supporter of gay people's right to be accepted and allowed to live 'normal' lives, and in answer to Atheo above, I'd just like to say you are right. Such a God does NOT exist. The behaviour you're seeing is as a result of the traditional interpretations of the Bible taught by blinkered, fallible, ignorant men.

It took me years to learn how to separate the monolithic institution that is organized christianity (in all it's guises) from God. They are not the same thing at all. And its a tragedy that people discard God because of the narrow-mindedness they see in people who call themselves his followers. Breaks my heart and leaves me feeling helpless.

Atheo says:

Hi Elle,

I don’t think it’s a narrow-minded interpretation of the Scriptures. Quite the contrary ! Christians, who preach that God is Love, have hated and persecuted homosexual people since the inception of Christianity. It’s not new, it’s not only the Evangelicals, but also the Catholics and others throughout the history of the Christendom. It’s rather your liberal interpretation that is new and shared by few believers.

I prefer worship Mother-Nature than this would-be Love-God. Mother-Nature don’t promise us everlasting life, but only life, the real life, with its joy and sadness, with its imperfections and quirks... and why not, its queers !!
