Homophobia leaves quite a nasty after taste and after reading this story from Pink News UK, we feel a trip to the dentist's in order. The Lima Homosexual Movement maintains that Peruvian police have been methodically targeting LGBT men and women, specifically tranny hookers. Though homosexuality and prostitution are both legal in Peru, there's still a fair amount of social stigma surrounding both social classes, especially so when they're not mutually exclusive. Pink News UK reports:
The Lima Homosexual Movement claims that figures they have compiled show over 600 homophobic assaults in the country over the last year.It's worth noting, however, that the coppers did recently arrest a man who's allegedly killed 13 people, including a number of gay men. Upon his arrest, the oh-so-charming Pedro Nakada Ludeña insisted that God himself ordered him to kill and justified his actions with the old social cleansing debate: "I'm not a criminal, I'm a social cleanser, I've rid society of homosexuals and vagrants." He had our best interest in mind, we're sure.A spokesman for the movement, Jorge Bracamonte, [says], "The homosexual population is often the object of violence inflicted by police, the same force that supposedly is there to guarantee people's security."
While this is certainly a horrific story, we have to say that their figures seem a bit outrageous. Approximately 600 homophobic attacks in one year? That's about 1.643 a day. Even with all the sweet Peruvian blow, that'd be quite a feat.
