President Bush (Finally) Sees Black People

200607-bushgordon.jpg

Speaking this morning at the annual NAACP Convention, President Bush had this to say:

I consider it a tragedy that the party of Abraham Lincoln let go of its historical ties with the African-American community. For too long, my party wrote off the African-American vote, and many African-Americans wrote off the Republican Party.

He's right. The Republicans have overlooked black people for too long. Evidenced by the president's turning down the NAACP's invitations to speak at its annual conventions — every year for the past five years. Oh, and Bush' disavowal of affirmative action, his Florida black vote theft, and his inhumane response to Hurricane Katrina.

Bush calls for unity before NAACP [AP]

It's always funny that Republicans always refer to themselves as "the party of Abraham Lincoln" when trying to court the black vote. Hmmmm....so the only positive bullet point you have concerning your parties relationship to black people is over 200 years old? And is a weak bullet point at that (the party system was COMPLETELY different back then).

Quite the case of "What have you done for me lately..." (or, even not so lately. Just within the last, hmm, century or so.)

Good point Rick, no way the Republican party today would have abolished slavery.

Hmmm, how many blacks were as high in an administration before GWB appointed Powell and Rice as SOS? C'mon, all blacks don't march in step with the NAACP. And them , in a later latest post, you mention that Bush also appointed a gay man as ambassador to the US Global Aids Conference. Not to mentioned doubling AIDS research funding.
Hey, you may be a die-hard Democrat, but at least acknowlege when a Republican does something right.
