Quebec Political Party Has New, Gay Leader

andreboisclair_2000.jpg

Maybe it's because we didn't grow up in Quebec, but we have to admit we find the whole sovereignty campaign a bit retarded. Where would the sovereign nation of Quebec get its oil? And what about television? Canada is already practically a third world country in that Project Runway comes on a week later. What would the Quebecois do?

Regardless, the pro-sovereignty Parti Quebecois has elected openly gay Andre Boisclair as their leader, and he is very cute. He promises to protect Quebec from all the bad foreign influences that might tempt Quebec citizens to not speak French or stop eating poutine. He has our vote; look at those dimples!

The pro-sovereignty Parti Quebecois, is a big joke. They want to separate but still retain Canada's currency and passport. No one takes them that seriously. In fact Quebec's economy is the best it's ever been because of the Liberal provincial government which boosted investor confidence.

As for him being cute... I'll probably see him checking out the HOT strippers who take it all off at local strip club...Campus. Then he will probably drop an e and dance the night away at Stereo night club with his shirt off.

like the site,
i live in montreal for 3 years now,
coming from europe previously,
not into Quebec independance idea at all, because as an immigrant, i don t feel "allowed" yet to give my own opinion on their idea of leaving the federation.
BUT i learnt from people i've met, stories i've heard, books i've read, independance is a real cultural problem with sources in the history of this "Belle Province"...
please, as for tolerance (behavior we, gays, are supposed to defend most of the time....), don't judge them too firmly! their ideas can be discussed , and can help to improve democracy (does anybody have a vague idea where we can find some, still?)...
moreover, in Vermont, more and more locals are thinking about leaving the Union because against the federal power that is growing up like crazy, reducing local democracy decisions....
only for this matter then, all the provinces of our both countries should choose independance, by refusing the neo-con policy, killing freedom....
we ve got here our own Bush with this ugly p.m.Harper who's against gays and lesbians, he ll try in the following months to cancel gay wedding that has been voted last year or so....
waste of time, and money because that's only matters....

ok, ok, ok, i stop complaining......

nice site though!!!

Nat says:

hey Canadian fan,

If "noone takes them seriously," then why did 49% of Quebeckers vote YES during the last sovereignity vote?!

I would say that half of the population is more than noone. In fact, some would argue that sovereignity got as much or more support than Dubya did at the last US election...

Canadian Fan, I have to say, I'm with Nat on this issue. Dismissing Quebec’s sovereignty movement as a “big joke” is not only ignorant, it’s precisely that kind of attitude fuels separatist Quebecers’ want to secede from confederation. Moreover, your generalization about the Liberals solving all of Quebec’s economic issues is hogwash. I suggest taking an Economics 101 course to learn that political climate is not the only variable in the equation for a healthy economy.

Canadian Fan,
You are such a Britisher. You stole their county, stole their name, you look down on them, make fun of them, nearly killed their language and culture then wonder why so many of them want to leave the federation. Va te faire foutre, salope! Vive le Quebec Libre!
As to where they would get their oil, from the Arabs just like the rest of us.
The economy is not the only issue driving the independance movement, it's also language and culture and the fact that the Anglos are assholes to them. How would we feel if the Mexicans invaded, took over, stole our name, and made us second class citizens in our own country? I bet we'd much more violent than the Quebecois have been.

Big in Texas says:

Unfranco,

How has Quebec treated the original settlers The Aboriginal people? they did the exact same thing you claim the British did. You better believe if Quebec separated, the Aboriginal people would separate from Quebec. That would leave them with nothing! So sit your ass down.

Hé, Grand à Texas, Tu peux la mordre, et ça ben fort! The French never tried to exterminate the natives, nor did they steal their lands. The French lived along side the natives and did business with them. Not at all like the British, and later the Americans, who tried their damnedest to kill as many natives as they could. Why don't you read some history. As far as I've seen, and admittedly, it's second hand because I don't live in Canada, but as far as I've seen the natives have a much better relationship with Québec than with Ottawa. The Québécois are know for their openness and tolerance of others. I know those are not values promoted in Texas, where you "manly" men can do no wrong by Jesus. The Québécois are a people who have never forgotten that the British stole their country, and many of them want it back. This question won't go away, not as long as the rest of Canada tries to deny the Québécois their sovereign right to self-determination. Alors, plantez vos fesses fermement par terre, mon p'tit.

I live in Canada says:

Unfranco... I live in Canada and know first hand that people from Quebec are not all tolerant of others especially english speaking Canadians and Europeans. I am not alone in my opinion but don't take my word for it just read the second post above from a European living in Quebec for the last 3 years.

Natives in Quebec have voiced there sovereign rights and self-determination should Quebec ever separate. They made that very clear during the last sovereignty vote.

I don't know where you learned your history but The British never stole "their" country. First off, Quebec has never been a country and will most likely never be. Most recent polls state that support for an independent Quebec has fallen below 30%.

Most people in Quebec, are sick of the issue. They just want a good economy, good health care, a safe place to raise a family. Canada delivers that and much much more.

And as a non-citizen of Canada YOU have NO say in the matter. So I suggest you use you voice to bring about rights and privileges that we in Canada enjoy. Oh ya... including Quebec... Gay Marriage, Gays in the Military, Gay adoption and human rights written in the constitution.

Peace

Lev Raphael says:

I've been to Québec over the years, but it wasn't until I went to Québec City, studied the history both via museums and books that I understood the long and complicated story. It includes conquest by the English symbolized by that column at Place Jacques Cartier (in your face!), many many years of suppression of the French language, class and economic differences, political disenfranchisement. When you understand all that, the fervor of independence that has flared up over the years makes perfect sense. Yes, Quebec (i.e. Nouvelle Frabce) was not an independent country per se, but it was very much a different country compared to British Canada. Quoi qu'il en soit, be that as it may, every time I'm there and talk to people, young and old, about independence, in French, I hear that it's simply not the burning issue it once was because for many reasons, including Québec's place as a prime world tourist destination. Meanwhile, everybody, enjoy Québec's natural beauty, its sophistication, its culture and history, its warmth, and the general sanity of Canada about social issues. Gay people can get married there and the country hasn't collapsed in anarchy. Vive la liberté en Canada!
