The photo at right of Arnold Schwarzenegger looks kinda funny, right? It was taken last week during a press conference in which the gov found himself confronted once again with the question of gay marriage—and the California legislature’s most recent effort to bring the question to a vote.
Schwarzy hasn’t been exactly what you’d call a “proponent” of gay marriage in Cali—he often and happily holds himself out to the masses under the “socially liberal/fiscally conservative” mantra that convinced the state’s overwhelming Democratic voters to go Republican in his initial ride to office in 2003, and he’s hidden behind his duty to uphold California’s state constitution when asked about his adamant vow to veto a Gay Marriage Amendment. You have to wonder if the state’s gay constituents have begun seriously considering if it’s theoretically possible to send a cyborg back in time to stop the 2003 recall—at present, it seems the only favorable option.
But California isn’t alone; numerous states are currently in the process of considering or bringing to the table gay marriage/civil union legislation—New Hampshire Connecticut and even our community’s vaunted win in New Jersey are at present at the center of fiery local debate that could well turn into a central matter of the 2008 Presidential campaign if enough gasoline gets dumped on things.
Arnold proves just how far the right plastic surgeon, steroids and a bikini wax can take you. Taking rights away from one group to satisfy another. Republican = Hater. Gay Republican = Totally Stupid. Thanks to all the California Gay Republicans that voted for him!
But isn't Arnold's position on gay rights exactly the same as all three Democratic presidential frontrunners?
Anti-discrimination laws = good
Gays in the military = fine
Domestic Partnerships = why not
Civil Unions = OK
Marriage = No, no, no...absolutely not
Although I'm certainly not in the business of defending Republicans, the whole "avoid gay marriage" phenomenon is hardly a Republican only game.
