QueerFeed: WorldPride Marches On

Gay Israel

WorldPride 2006 kicks off this weekend in Jerusalem, despite vast efforts to have it shuttered or moved. Organizers prepare for a week of events, depsite the on-going attacks with Lebanon. [Pink News]

• Switching from California to New Mexico, three gay bashing suspects have been arrested and charged with hate crimes in the beating of an 18-year-old gay man. [Advocate]

• As Connecticut's Democratic race for U.S. Senate heats up, incumbent Joe Lieberman has decades of healthy relations with the gay community to back him against challenger Ned Lamont. [INW]

• The annual gay pride/AIDS event aimed at people of color in Queens, New York – Pride in the City – had its five year history put into jeopardy after park services officials tried to limit attendance at 1,500 (it usually reaches 5,000) and ban the live concert, supposedly an effort to curb littering and obstruction to beach goers. After plenty of media attention, the city officials relented somewhat: live music will be allowed, at a distance, but attendance will still be capped at a fraction of what's expected. [NYT]

Yeah, littering...right. Nothing scares 77% of the population more than a large group of "non-whites"--except a large group of non-white GLBT people of course.

Is the Lieberman item simply a statement of fact, or are we to infer that gays in Connecticut are or should be single-issue voters?

Oh, so Queerty is now supporting Grandma Joe Lieberman? What the fuck, guys? Almost without exception, the political "news" on this site seems to be informed by stuff David overheard while sipping a Stella at Starlight with Pink is the New Trent. (Let's not forget Miami Dan's impassioned defense of the Bush Administration around Eastertime.) Maybe you guys should just stick to posting pictures of grossout muscle queens posing in tacky 2xist thongs. UGH!

Remind me, again. Was it's Lieberman's support of the Defense of Marriage Act that was an example of those "healthy relations" with the gay community? Or perhaps it was the way he undercuts his own party whenever the President or the Republicans want to enact something that will have a negative impact on everybody but rich, white, straight men?

David Hauslaib, Queerty says:

It's worth noting: Lieberman opposed the Federal Marriage Amendment. Instead he favored allowing individual states choosing whether to allow same-sex marriages.

Meanwhile, not that we're necessarily falling in line with the endorsements of the Human Rights Campaign, but Lieberman has the org's support (which, to be fair, has angered some HRC members). Specifically, as HRC president Joe Solomnese is quoted in the above references article, for his "consistent opposition to efforts to put discrimination in the U.S. Constitution, Senator Lieberman is a trusted ally in Congress."

Lieberman also signed 2001's Employment Non-Discrimination Act, barring employers from discriminating against hires based on, among other things, sexual orientation.

Though yes, it is certainly important to note Lieberman is not backing gay marriage. Lamont, meanwhile, has been in favor of gay marriage since the beginning of his campaign.

Far be it for us, however, to consider gay marriage the only worthwhile policy stance to monitor.

Please, please, PLEASE stop the insanity!!!

Joe Lieberman is a terrible Senator. I don't care whether or not he likes the gays. However he feels, Ned Lamont (his challenger) will do a lot more to support gays.

And he won't support Iraq and dozens of other anti-progressive policies that I would argue most gay people want achieved.

Frank [TypeKey Profile Page] says:

I'd like to chime in and say that I am avidly opposed to Joe Lieberman's reelection. He has gone even further than Tom "Spineless" Daschle by actually becoming a tool for the Bush administration, and he deserves the same fate as Mr. Daschle in my opinion.

Plus he should get an extra spanking for that homophobic attack ad he put out a while ago:
