Gene Robinson's never shied from controversy. The openly gay Archbishop of New Hampshire's 2004 ascension has led to a severe rift in the worldwide Anglican Communion, not to mention America's Episcopal Church. His recent comments on coming out, we're sure, will raise a fresh stink from detractors:
If you want to know my homosexual agenda, it's Jesus. Can we make this man a saint?I feel that this is a real extension of what I've been called to do in the gospels.
And I would propose to you that peoples' coming out - gay and lesbian folk being honest about who they are, what their lives are, what their families are like, their desire to contribute to this culture, to serve in the military, to take their place as full citizens of this country - is God at work.

Meanwhile, in other Episcopal news, Robinson's chum and the head of the Episcopal Church, Katharine Jefferts Schori, shot down conservative South Carolina Rev. Mark Lawrence's election as bishop. Lawrence has previously spoken out against Schori's "liberal" practices. International Herald Tribune reports:
The elevation of the Very Rev. Mark Lawrence had become a flash point in the denomination's struggle over whether parishioners with conflicting views of the Bible on gays and other issues could stay in the same denomination. The last time the Episcopal Church threw out a bishop's election was more than seven decades ago. This sounds a bit fishy to us. According to the article, Lawrence had a fair majority in the vote, but Schori struck him down anyway. While certainly we'd like to see the Church move toward the left, we can't approve of Schori's seemingly dubious methods. Yeah, we'll probably get some flack for that, but fair's fair...
...
In the South Carolina case, Jefferts Schori concluded that several Episcopal dioceses had failed to submit proper written consent for the election as required by church law, according to the Rev. J. Haden McCormick, head of the committee that administers the South Carolina Diocese.

I love Gene Robinson so much. i don't agree with him on beliefs and such, but what he does is so important... and his call for those gays and lesbians to come out and be honest about who they are was wonderful....
