The Great Gay Jew Debate
May Be Able To Marry, But Can They Screw?

Star%3ADavid.jpg
It's almost the moment some of you may or may not have been waiting for/aware of: the annual meeting of the Rabbinical Committee on Jewish Law and Standards! Jew-rah!

As we reported way back in September, Jewish Conservative leaders will meet in Los Angeles to discuss how to integrate homo-heebs into the broader community without alienating either side: a daunting task, to say the least. In addition to debating whether or not to ordain openly gay Rabbis, the Committee will also release an official stance on sex of the homo variety. The Los Angeles Times reports:

In a much-anticipated event, an international rabbinical council is scheduled next week to debate and vote on possibly dropping the unevenly enforced bans against gay rabbis and same-sex commitment ceremonies.
...But, keeping some tradition of rabbinical interpretation of the Bible, [Committee leader Rabbi Elliot Dorff's] proposal would prohibit anal sex between men. Other forms of consensual, monogamous sex would be permitted.

Dorff admits the concessions defy reality - how can one expect married couples not to have sex? - but insists that certain laws must be upheld to maintain the movement's committment to Talmudic law.
A restriction on gay anal sex, he said, is similar to rules against heterosexual intercourse during menstruation. But requiring celibacy would be, he said, cruel and "very un-Jewish."

By that, he means The Torah's celebration of fulfilling sex-lives among married straight couples. Of course, the Conservative movement can't afford to be entirely logical: they've been losing members left and right to the respectively. left and right Reform and Orthodox movements.

Another Gay Dad says:

Since the mid-1990’s, the Jewish Reform Movement (the largest Jewish denomination in the US) has called for civil same-sex marriage. Since 2000, the movement affirmed "that the relationship of a Jewish, same gender couple is worthy of affirmation through appropriate Jewish ritual."
