If you're like us, you spent last night glued to Cat Deeley's London legs for the two-hour finale of So You Think You Can Dance. It's a topic we've covered before, giving one contestant in particular – Benji – our full attention. For us, he was Dance's Clay Aiken. But unlike Clay, Benji wasn't the runner up last night: he won! Beating out the other three top candidates (including cousin Heidi), Benji nabbed $100k in cash, some forgettable ride, and a year-long gig as Celine Dion's bitch. But it's not Benji's win that we're so surprised at — but his makeover. Just like Clay, Benji went from geeky nerd to manufactured sex symbol (though it was only the 12-year-old Church girls and their grandmothers who were buying).
(Note: To be fair, the above photo is of Benji right after he found out he won. And that came right after he did a dance number, so he's not looking too good.)
Benji still looks like a geeky nerd. Travis was the better dancer. He should have won. This year was a popularity contest, not a dance contest. :P
Wasn't the final vote in America's hands? Then of course it's a popularity contest ;)
Ahh, but the difference between Benji and Clay? Benji actually has talent and is cute.
Thankfully, for us AND for Benji, dancers don't have nearly the visibility of singers. So, for us, we won't have the constant "is he or isn't he" that we've had for Clay forever. And, for Benji, he won't have to suffer it, and can come out when he wants. That is, if he's gay, which I'm not so sure he is.
Either way, though, Travis should have won. He's WAY hotter, a better dancer, and less inhibited about himself.
I was counting on the gays having it right about Travis being the better dancer, so I'm not disappointed. Not to take a thing away from Benji, because he has improved significantly over the course of the show, but you knew he was going to win once it got to phone voting, because the target audience (as evidenced by the studio audience) for the show is fourteen-year-old girls. It's a mystery to me why they still have female dancers on the show at all, since they stand no chance of winning the whole banana on the basis of their merits (unless something in the water supply suddenly causes all American adolescent girls to suddenly turn lesbian en masse).
Travis is young and was already on his way to a career as a serious dancer before he got into this show, so he'll be perfectly okay. In fact, I think that outside of working with Mia Michaels (who choreographs Celine's Vegas show), he probably would have suffered being shackled to Celine Dion for a year, and Benji was already earning bucks dancing professionally with Heidi before, so it's all pretty much a wash.
Benji can rub this whole thing in his ex-fiancee's face now (that is, if she actually exists, and I'm not so sure she doesn't), which is an amusing bonus, particularly if there's a big gay-porn fantasy orgy on the SYTYCD tour with Ivan (eek), Dmitry (which might piss Heidi off a little bit), Benji, Travis and Ryan. (I know, I'm going to hell for even suggesting that.)
Getting away from all the bickering whether Benji is gay or not; whether he's talented or not, does anyone know out there if Benji is actually going to go and perform in Celine Dion's show. One article stated Benji was thinking quite seriously he was not going to take that "win" due to a few reasons. If someone has some info on this, please post the news and also any news on when he is to start being in Celine's show if he does decide to accept the "gig" Thanks
