In case you were wondering why there was both a Gay Games and an Outgames it's because the gays are typically feuding among themselves. The Federation of Gay Games wanted to centralize the finances following the debacle that was the 2002 Sydney Gay Games, thus taking away some financial freedom from individual organizers, and the group organizing the Gay Games in Montreal was none too pleased. Rather than reconcile, the group split off from the Federation of Gay Games and put together the Outgames.
Both events drew about the same number of participants, and both generated a good amount of revenue for the cities of Chicago and Montreal, but we think it would have been more productive, and competitive, had there only been one gay sports tournament this summer. We hope the queens in charge of both the Gay Games and Outgames will take a hard look at how dividing an already fringy tournament makes the competition seem like a joke.
No reconciliation for gay sports competitions [Washington Blade]
Centralise control? Interesting way of putting it. The gay games, partially through the requirement to pay serious cash to license that name (money incidentally going to a straight woman, the ex-wife of the founder of the games) has caused untold harm to the organisers of the games in previous years - including bankruptcies, reposessions of guarantors' property and at least once suicide of an organiser.
The Outgames people decided not to dance to that tune any more. Can you blame them?
Obviously you've never been to the Gay Games or you certainly wouldn't refer to it as a "fringy tournament". That sounds a bit more like something you might wear on a Saturday night out with your gal pals. The Gay Games are a seriously competitive sporting event. At least 3 national records were set at the swimming competition alone and former olympian Dan Veatch set a world record at the Outgames. Instead of whining about how the two events should unite (they never will), you should get off you ass and compete in both of them next time around and encourage others to do the same. More gay sporting events just means more visibiliy. Its all good.
Or, even better, they could stagger the two events (sorta like the Olypics), so that homo's can get together to seriously compete more than once every four years.
Say what you want about the excessive fees charged by the Gay Games, it still seems to be both popular and successful. Organizers need to think more professionally in weighing proceeds versus costs. Gay or Straight, lots of events/business fail from lack of planning or business sense.
