GLAAD Wants More Gays on TV. Shit, really?

snipshot_nkq1sv669.jpg

GLAAD recently released a survey of fall programing that shows a decline in central gay characters on network television from ten to nine, amounting to a measly 1.3 percent. GLAAD president Neil G. Giuliano says:

It's clear that the broadcast networks have a long way to go before they accurately reflect the diversity of their audience and our society.

Okay, so no gays on network. That leaves cable. With the death of Queer Eye, it seemed the curtain would soon fall on the hey-day of the hey-gay. Never fear, GLAAD, as long as marketing executives continue tapping that gay root we'll have hours and hours of televised faggotry.

As you recall - unless you were too hung over this morning, lush - Sunsilk Hairapy has the homo three. If that's not enough, we have the oh-so-progressive MTV (they do own Logo, you know, the gay station...) and their Next dating show. They've been known to throw the homos into that tacky sex bus. We were lucky enough to catch an episode a few nights back featuring a group of young faglings, one of whom admitted to making a little girl cry. Why? "I'm a diva!"

Sure, GLAAD, we need more of this like we need another asshole. Wait...would that be good or bad?

I love the ridiculous hypocrisy of Guiliani's statement: "It's clear that the broadcast networks have a long way to go before they accurately reflect the diversity of their audience and our society." Take a good whiff of the homogeneity of what the Gay(tm) media churns when it has a chance: Logo, Queer Eye. Gimme a break! Thank you for providing a voice outside the arena of the circuit queen, the wispy fairy, and the equally shallow and monolithic bear culture. Y'all are always a good read and provoke a good bit of meaningful discussion. In fact, I think it's odd that no one has applauded you or taken you to task on this post. Heh.

At any rate, keep up the good work.

RSL, I have no idea who you are, but THANK YOU! Thank you for pointing out that the bear culture is equally as shallow and monolithic as many of the other subcultures of gaydom. I've been saying this for years, but all I get in return is grief. Glad someone else agrees.

isn't that funny that glaad wants more gays on tv. they had three networks full of them last year, yet when they had an awards show, they gave 95% of them to straight people. almost everyone one the award show was straight.
glaad's in bed with logo, logo's in bed with the advocate, the advocate own most majore gay websites, so you can trust you will never read a bad review of any logo series in any gay publication that is owned by the viacom corporation.

so perhaps if glaad wants to see more positive gay role models, they should chat it up with logo. however, if they are just bummed that the glaad awards will no longer be the WILL AND GRACE AWARDS and sean hayes is off the scene, then they should do something about it.

am i bitter? yes. am i jaded? yes.
did i find it disturbing that LOGO does not allow the airing of two men kissing? Yes. Do I find it hypocritical that GLAAD does not have a problem with this or that LOGO failed to air a pro gay church ad? YES.

maybe they own this site too. if so, this posting will never see the light of day.

who watching the watchdog?

What "lack of gay TV"???

There are more gay stereotypes (err...I mean "characters") in the first five minutes of "Project Runway" than there are in all of San Francisco!!!

Can we please just have good gay TV shows?

(who am I kiddin'? They can't even make good STRAIGHT TV shows!)

I haven't turned on the tube in a loooooooong time because of the lack of good shows (i.e. I'd rather read a book). Is there any monogamous same-sex couple on prime-time television that is not being hit upon with ridicule, yet?

As far as I remember looking back about a year ago, all gay guys on tv remained single... or usually had a trick to keep them busy for a few hours or at most, a week.

Bernie says:

Your sentence: "Okay, so no gays on network."

Did you really mean that? To see gays in any significant way, you have to subscribe to basic cable. That's okay?

I'm surprised. I think when the most famous gay show on television is on Bravo (Queer Eye), and Logo charges a fee on top of what we pay for MTV, then that means there's still a problem.

RSL says:

Bernie, I think what's going on is that gays [even on cable] aren't shown in any "significant way", to use your own term. Gay(tm) is visible but Gay(tm) is a joke to everyone who isn't part of it. I can't point fingers at the media alone [they're in the business of putting up simplified, one-dimensional images of EVERY group/topic/whatever] but must call gay culture to the stand as well for concentrating so hard on non-issues [Gay marriage? Marriage isn't even working for straights! Don't let me get started] that we fail to accomplish the basics.

I think there are definitely gay representatives in pop culture nowadays, the example you gave of the Sunsilk Hairapy trio was spot on.. I actually am amused by the over-the-top gayness of these guys, esp. with Mario Cantone leading the pack--

The real stink that nobody smells is that these annual reports from GLAAD are FIRST a report on THEIR failure to do anything to see that there are more LGBT characters in the media, and I hasten to add postive ones—which would not include your late, unlamented freak show on QTV, Ms. Jett.

None of the studios, networks, production companies have listened to GLAAD for years—except to accept awards at their three annual circle jerks. From the "20/20" smear of Matthew Shepard two years ago to MSNBC simply smile fucking GLAAD this year about the repeated homophobic remarks of Don Imus and Ann Coulter, they are a paper tiger with a multimillion dollar budget provided by the gay fools who still think they're something more. Add to that their whoring for Coors and I say: FUCK GLAAD and not in the good way.

i can't agree with you more. and yes my show was a freak show. and you are right on about glaad and qtn. we did continue a bashing of ms. vargas for the hatchet job she did with matthew sheppard. the strange thing is that i agree with 100% of what you say, i just don't understand your anger at me. it's cool that you don't like the show.

and you can only call me ms. jett if your nasty.

i love you leland. please love me back.
