Fresno California student Cinthia Covarrubias made waves in Fresno, California last week when she became the first official transgender student to run for King of her school's prom.
"I hope this opens up something new," Covarrubias said. "I've been really excited about it and feeling a lot of hope."
After much ado and not a little discussion, Covarrubias' school reversed its initial decision barring Covarrubias from making a run for the crown, ultimately throwing the decision to her classmates...who voted for some dude named Dan Abril instead.

It is really sad that in 2007 gays still doesn't understand the T in glbt. When a person is transgender we refer to them as their current gender identity not their birth sex. Why is this so hard to understand? You really ought to change your post to male pronouns. It is disrespectful to the person and shows your ignorance.

Hey, Auston! :) Normally I'd agree with you, but from the original article I read (before this was posted) it seemed that Covarrubias identifies specifically as "trans" and alternates pronoun use. I think (emphasis on "think") the AP goes by the guideline of using preferred pronouns for trans people. For instance, Largo City Manager Steve (Susan) Stanton hadn't officially begun transition at the eruption of the brouhaha and was still going by Steve, so that's how they've reported it.
I know these guys at Queerty can be irritatingly flip about trans stuff sometimes, but for the most part they're pretty good about using whatever pronoun they're given. :)
