Celebs Gather To Celebrate Fashion, Looking Good

fordgala.jpg
The world's most stylish fashionistas, singers, actors and hangers-on made their way to The Metropolitan Museum of Art last night for the Costume Institute's Gala. This year the institute honored the late, great French designer Paul Poiret. Poiret's stunning designs drew on both Oriental and art deco aesthetic, but constantly revolved around his favorite flower: the rose.

Our invitation must have gotten lost in the mail, so we had to live vicariously through press images. Shame, because we would have loved to pick Tom Ford and French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld's respective brains. Oh well, there's always next year.

Take a look at some more shots, after the jump...

For Reals, For Reals...

brazilsudster.jpg
• See these two men? They're Brazilian actors named Sérgio Abreu and Carlos Casagrande and they're totally playing lovers on a new prime-time sudster, Paraíso Tropica. How do you say "very hot" in Portuguese? [Made in Brazil]

Viktor and Rolf are so avant-garde! They totally strapped lights to a model. [IHT]

• We totally inspired Kenneth Hill to make a super-hero. He didn't name it, though. Perhaps you can help. [QueerSighted]

• Meanwhile, HX editor Brandon Voss has been spending some time with Sarah Silverman. The result? An eye-opening interview. Did you know you can say "cunt" on Comedy Central after 1am? Now you do. Thanks Voss and Silverman, you just made our day. [The Advocate]

• Here's another tough question: if you're on American Idol and have an initialed name, does that make you gay? It certainly looks that way. [Brace Face]

• A Swedish club's been ordered to pay 30,000 kronor after asking a lesbian couple to stop snogging. Yeah, that's basically all you need to know... [The Local]

Talk About Being Light in the Loafers

VRDance.jpg
VikRolf2.jpg
Our friends, Viktor & Rolf (pictured, right) have done it again. The avant-garde designers used their Paris Fashion week show to display a little gender-bending and homo-love. Tucked beneath the Louvre, attendees watched as hetero-couples ballroom danced to Rufus Wainwright's gayer-than-thou channeling of Judy Garland.

Then, according to Guy Trebay of The New York Times, just as the final march of models were to be tramping down the runway, the floor became a politically-minded playland of faggotry:

Pumped from the ceiling, a bank of artificial fog rolled onto the runway. Suddenly, through the mist, appeared eight men in tailcoats and with patent-leather hair. Filing onto the catwalk as the orchestra struck up a song, each turned crisply to another, partnered and began to dance.

Fred and Ginger became Fred and Fred.

It was not the Stonewall rebellion. It was not Paris, May 1968. Yet, amid all the posturing and attitudinizing that goes on in fashion...there was something sharp and resolute, even radical, about this one small moment.

In an effort to question popular opinion of homosexuality, the dynamic designing duo decided to put their own twist on the debate. "'It was using the very unnatural form,” or ballroom dancing, [Viktor] Horsting said, “to question what is natural.'" It's worth noting, as Trebay agrees, that Horsting renounced his Catholic baptism to protest the Vatican's relentless disdain for homosexuality.

If you have a cooler method of protest than gay ballroom dancing below the Louvre and possible self-imposed damnation, we'd like to know.

It’s eat or be eaten in the world of fashion, thus it’s not really in our best interest to post the next tidbit, but we’re feeling generous this morning. Design duo Viktor and Rolf – whose designs are seen most often on Tilda Swinton – are collaborating with the-ever populist H&M for a limited fall collection. The men’s and women’s collection will be released the world over starting in November. It’s best to start making preparations now: you know how greedy fashion mavens can be, especially when it comes to limited editions. Start growing those nails – you’re going to need them. You can thank us with an offering. That is, if you escape alive...

Tilda Swinton

Tilda Swinton is an avant garde fashion muse, an actress too cool for the A-list, and newest gay icon on the block. The NY Times Style Magazine,T, put the 44 year old on the cover of the women's fashion issue this past weekend and in doing so solidified her status as one of this generation's greatest chameleons alongside Bjork and Madonna.

Her movie roles have been as unique as the actress herself. She played a man in Orlando, a troubled mother of a homosexual son in The Deep End, and is about to play the white witch in the Chronicles of Narnia.

She plays the role of muse with equal intensity and has been saluted by Viktor and Rolf, Hussein Chalayan, and Stefano Pilati. The NYT's photo-shoot, shot by Raymond Meier, captures her versatility and wonder perfectly.
