REDEEMING HYPOCRITES

QUOTE: Should Anti-Equality Politicians Make “It Gets Better” Videos?

” I’ll just say this about Canada’s conservatives contribution to the “It Gets Better” Project: People who are in a position to make it better—elected officials—but who have chosen, over the years, to make it worse, can come around. It’s essential that they do. People who have advanced the cause of ignorance and bigotry and hate–people, like Vic Toews, people who have empowered the bullies–are welcome to see the error of their ways, to come around, to make amends and make it up. But it’s going to take more than a video to undo the damage done by Vic Toews and Canada’s conservatives. This was, quite literally, the least Vic and his fellow conservatives could do. The very least.”

– Dan Savage reacting to an “It Gets Better” video made by conservative, anti-equality Canadian Members of Parliament in response to Jamie Hubley’s death.

      I found it odd that Vic Toews would be involved as well, but there is a gay politician involved in the video as well. It is too bad,he didnt take the opportunity when this came out to come out as well.

      NO they fucking shouldn’t. They should be publicly flogged for hypocricy and voted out of power as soon as possible.

      What good would it do for these asswipes to make an it gets better video to begin with? If they are against equality and hate people who are gays then their words are false lies and scripted it would be obvious to the naked eye from the very beginning.I’d rather not see a video of someone claiming it gets better when they are the kinds of people who are responsible for making it WORSE for this community.Especially for these teens who are on the brink of self destruction in this country due to bullying.

      That is just sick and insulting – everyone please log in on youtube and rate that video down. Comments are censored but not the rating system.

      Shameful. There’s also a rather lovely character in the current Canadian Conservative government – John Baird of Ottawa. John Baird – closeted homosexual and right-wing suck up who lives with one foot, and both balls, firmly in the closet. Every once in a while a new photo of him is leaked online of him cuddling up to the latest in a series of younger white boys whose company he pays for. He’s a disgusting Roy Cohn.

      Dan Savage can be a blunt bastard when the situation calls for it–so what the fuck is he doing sugar-coating garbage like this?

      The “This Gets Better” campaign has struck me as fake and hollow since the beginning–the truth is, for some people it does NOT get better. And when it does get better, it’s still not all sunshine and roses because that’s how life is. Kids aren’t stupid, and they know when they hear someone gushing “you just can’t imagine how glorious your life will become” that for most people, it’s bullshit. But if there happened to be any kids out there who believed the its get better message, the acceptance of Vic Toews’ insincere regurgitation of the line just proved to them that they’ve been taken for fools.

      Douchebags like Toews make a living proving to LGBT kids that they are subhuman. The man deserves a sledgehammer to the temple, not a pat on the back.

      @Dave:

      well what should we tell LGBT kids instead? ‘just kill yourself now because it’s not going to get any better’?
      While it’s true for some people it doesn’t get better, for the majority it does. And while there may be assholes like Vic Toews reading off auto-cues to try and get themselves looked upon favourably by the Gay community, the majority of the ‘It Gets Better’ videos (and I should point out to you that it’s ‘It gets better’ not ‘This gets better’) were well intended and made in the hope that a LGBT kid would see that video and thousands of other videos like it and have hope. And I think, if the it gets better project saves even just one life, it has done its job.
