QUOTE: Stop Using Kim Kardashian’s 72-Day Marriage As An Argument For Gay Marriage

Can everyone please stop citing some gross lady’s stunt marriage and stunt divorce as “proof” that it’s not gay people who are destroying the sanctity of marriage? Because saying that you are somehow better and that you take marriage more seriously than someone who became famous for getting pissed on in a sex tape is not saying much.”

- The Sword’s Zachary Sire (NSFW) suggesting that marriage equality advocates stop citing Kim Kardashian’s 72-day marriage as proof that straights do more to hurt the “sanctity” of marriage than gays.

It’s way beyond Kardashian’s brief marriage. It’s about the hypocrisy of heterosexuals, celebrities or otherwise, friends or foes of SSM, who commit adultery, philander, divorce and choose to have children out of wedlock that are the real threat to marriage. This has been going on since marriage as we know it has existed. All of the reasons hurled at opposing SSM are nothing more than red herrings when you look at the total lack of commentary by the right wing organizations fighting us. Not one of them chastized any of the politicians for their sexual antics or preached the sanctity of marriage mantra to them, or the family values nonsense.

But isn’t that the point? A woman like that can legally marry some random dude that she barely knows (possibly even arranged by agents), just to get more fame and fortune; When respectful, hard-working, educated, same-sex couples cannot. But yet we’re the ones destroying/making a mockery of the “sacred”, “sanctity” and “tradition” of marriage?

Yeah, i get what he means and all but in this “straight” world, these girls adore this bitch. They think the actions this bitch does is something they need to achieve, like a dream. (I think they need to lay off the four loko for a few days and come back to planet earth) so i disagree. Shove it in their face, cause many of us are better than them and once they realize that this dream of becoming a rich bitch is retarded, the better off the world will be. (But there will be one casualty. The E! Network will lose all programming and shut down. Oh the HORROR!)

@rudie32: Who adores Kim? I don’t think many women or teenagers see her as a role model at all or someone they should pattern their life after. People watch her show as trash entertainment to have a laugh or forget their problems for a half hour. They laugh at her, not think she is the greatest person in the world.

@Robert in NYC: It’s only hypocritical if the celebrity who’s getting divorced, adultery or have children out of marriage are also preaching against gay marriage. Someone like Kim Kardasian isn’t doing that. In fact, she has said she is for equal marriage rights. We make a mistake when we pick on individuals who have said nothing against us rather than government or society as a whole when denying our rights.
I find this type of argument really judgmental and moralizing. Not all gay relationships are so perfect and loving. Gay people break up after a few months, cheat on their partners too! We should say have the right to have a 72 day marriage too not say our relationships are so much better and longer lasting than straight people.
What’s a straight celebrity to do? If a relationship doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. Should they stay in horrible relationships? How does that help gay rights?

That’s exactly the point. No one is saying gay people are “better than” but that if this bimbo can have a sham of a marriage, anyone should be able to have a good or bad marriage.

      The Kardashians are grifters.

It’s shocking that they managed to haul in $65 million last year for nothing. They don’t sing, act, dance, write music, direct movies, play baseball, or cure disease.

The Kardashians are a freakshow and I blame Ryan Seacrest. Had he not launched the TV show, Keeping up with The Kardashians, we wouldn’t be responding to this post.

Raising the Kardashian issue is not “an argument for gay marriage.”

It’s an argument that current marriage laws are totally fucking stupid.

@Little Kiwi: I wouldn’t say he’s a complete fucking moron – althugh I can see where someone would get that from. And I’m not sure that he’s intellectually lazy. But he does post stuff that seems to have a lot of logical disconnects or elisions of ideas that don’t seem to go together.
Yes, Little Kiw, I know that this comes across as intellectually lazy, so logically I’m agreeing with you. D’uh! That said, I still read a lot of what he says – even though I disagree with most of it on both his porn site and his big boy blog – because I want to understand how his mind works.

Oh fuck it Little Kiwi. You’re right. Please stage an intervention.

      Fuck him.

This is the PERFECT example to show that those evangellicals do NOT take Marriage seriously. The fact that they don’t protest against divorce, quicky Vegas marriage etc… And that the same people against gay marriage probably were tuning in to E to watch this sham is a perfect example of hypocrisy.

I don’t know who Zach Zire is and don’t give a shit, and I get that he probably needs to say anything controversial he can think of to get blogs like this to print his name, but this was a fail.

Weird though how Queerty will add an opinion or commentary on a lot of stuff….but not on this. Are they back to supporting people who seem to attack the community again?

What’s the point of highlighting this quote? There’s nothing profound about Zachary Sire’s statement and it seems like most of us don’t agree with him.

Also, i don’t think she got peed on in that video.

Well duh, of course it’s not saying much to say you take marriage more seriously than Kim Kardashian. It is saying a lot to say that Kim Kardashian’s marraige was “real” in the eyes of the law, and many LGBT couples’ aren’t. That’s the point. Again, THAT’S THE POINT. This isn’t hard.

The ‘straw man’ fallacy according Wikipedia (parenthesis mine) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man:
      1. Person A has position X (e.g. opposition to gay marriage).
      2. Person B disregards certain key points of X (e.g. opposition to gay marriage) and instead presents the superficially similar position Y (e.g. proposing heterosexual relationships are, in contrast, life-long). Thus, Y is a resulting distorted version of X and can be set up in several ways, including:
Presenting someone who defends a position poorly (Kim Kardashian, hard-line conservative) as the defender, then refuting that person’s arguments (or mistakes) — thus giving the appearance that every upholder of that position (and thus the position itself) has been defeated.

However, Kim Kardashian is not a spokesperson for heterosexual marriages. Her show-biz marriage is not representative of those who oppose gay marriage. On the contrary, she is a staunch advocate for gays: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mf9tcxHnVds

Guess what? Citing Kim Kardashian’s marriage woes is a ‘Straw man’ fallacy.

The thing is – i’d actually be fine with a lot of the Conservative-Right’s “marriage rules” if they’d actually follow through with them.

for example, if they insist that marriage is about procreation then i’d be FINE with it – as long as fertility tests are mandatory for all couples before marriage licenses are granted and Civil Unions are offered to those who are infertile.

or if their citing of “biblical marriage” meant that only virgins are allowed to marry. i’d be fine with that if they yanked opened the legs of every woman who applied for a marriage license to see the condition of her hymen (sorry to those women whose hymens broke from “riding bikes” or other such thangs…)and they…uh….do whatever test one does to determine whether or not a man is a virgin…(“smell yo’ dick?”)

Either way, if they wanna get BIBLICAL about it then i expect them to follow through. marriages for virgins, civil unions for the rest of us who are marrying people we already know we’re sexually compatible with ;-)

but they don’t follow through. they’re not consistent. Donald Trump is in favour of “traditional marriage” – i suppose tradition means flying your mistress to aspen where your family is on vacation so you can boff her over the Xmas holidays, then leaving your wife for her, marrying her, but divorcing her before the 10 year mark because that saves you money, and then marrying a supermodel. i don’t think i can financially afford THAT kind of “traditional marriage” but i can try….
