Belgian tourist Aridi Amipi hoped to party in a South African gay bar, but a security guard barred him entry from the bar. Amipi claims the man prohibited him because he’s black. The guard and bar owners – who have previously been accused of discrimination – claim it’s mistaken identity – Amipi resembled a “problem client”. It’s not racism if they look alike, right?! The gay scene in SA is still, sadly, pretty divided. Recently, in a gay venue in Pretoria, I heard the manager make disparaging remarks about blacks, in a way that suggested he was glad his own establishment was largely lily-hued. Just for the record – not that it means that much – but as far as I know the owner of Bronx in Cape Town, Mr. Bronn, is an American.
