Recognition.

Israel’s government broke new ground when it granted citizenship to an 8-year old Cambodian boy adopted in America by two gay men. The move comes a month after the Attorney General ruled that same-sex couples deserve the same adoption rights as their straight counterparts. For those of you wondering, yes, the Cambodian boy converted to Judaism. [AFP]

It’s being considered a tacit endorsement of gay marriage. Chalk up one more country ahead of the U.S.

I don’t understand the story. So…two Israeli gay men came to America and adopted a Cambodian boy? Or were they American citizens who then later moved to Israel? Is that what happened? Where’s the rest of the story? Why did they come to America to adopt a Cambodian boy? Is it even legal for people from other countries to come to America and adopt children and then take them overseas?

It’s a bad summary. But if you (Jon) were to go to the source, these men have dual American and Israeli citizenship. They adopted the kid who was born in Cambodia (not America) while they were living in the US. And, FYI, America did recognize the kid as their son and granted him citizenship. They returned to Israel and wanted that country to legally recognize the child as their adopted son, too. Simple. Here’s a question, can Asians be Jewish? Asian-Jew, kinda of an oxymoron to me. And I’m asian and Cambodian. :-)

Thanks Cambo. Queerty has a habit of leaving facts out of their postings.

Don’t know about the Asian-Jew thing. I’ve never even thought about it.

I’ve met Asian Jews. It’s a religion, not a race.

Yes, Cambo, if you do some research you will find the there are Jews who are African, Arabic, Persian, Asian, Turkish and others…not just Jews that look like Jerry Seinfeld and Barbra Streisand.

There is an entire population of Jews in western China. The Diaspora nearly 2000 years ago saw Jews migrating all over the Old World. I’m not positive of the history but I believe the Ethiopian Jews date from the time of King Solomon and claim a link with the Queen of Sheba. Many or all of them were evacuated to Israel during the years of the marxist dictatorship in Ethiopia. I don’t know the lineage of the Jews in China but from an article I read some years ago, they have a distinctly Asian appearance. There is (or was) a population of Jews in India as well dating from the Diaspora.

It’s ironic really, but the two religions that have had the longest history of persecution of Jews first appeared amongst Jews; Christians and Muslims. It tends to confirm my view that religions become malignant over time. Now Jews in Israel are doing to Muslims in Palestine some of the same things Christians did to them such as forced removal and isolation in ghettos.
