Queerty reader Jeffrey reminded us that not all black churches are speaking out against President Obama’s support for marriage equality. In a recent sermon, Rev. Otis Moss, III of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ, read from a letter to a fellow minister who’s on the wrong side of history.
At one point Moss takes his colleague to task for conflating religious and civil marriage: “There is a difference between a rite, r-i-t-e, and a right, r-i-g-h-t.”

Truly a righteous man! Thank you, Reverend Moss! (Now would you mind calling Reverend Anthony Evans?)
Lee
He’s cute. =)
Michael
Man oh man, why can’t everyone be like this?

“There is a difference between a rite, r-i-t-e, and a right, r-i-g-h-t.”
Pow! There’s the money quote. This should be repeated everywhere, every time.

Love is more difficult than hate. Thank you, Rev. Otis Moss, III.
Wherever healing is, Christ is. You can tell what quality of spiritual soil one’s roots are planted in by the fruit that one bears. The fruits of the Spirit are love, patience, kindness, goodness, and truth. You know it when you see it and so will Christ. Love, above all else, is the objective. The fruits of the Spirit are easily recognizable. As for the man who is a weak believer, welcome him (into your fellowship), but not to criticize his opinions or pass judgment on his scruples or perplex him with discussions. One (man’s faith permits him) to believe he may eat anything, while a weaker one (limits his) eating to vegetables. Let not him who eats look down on or despise him who abstains, and let not him who abstains criticize and pass judgment on him who eats; for God has accepted and welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on and censure another’s household servant? It is before his own Master that he stands or falls. We will be given the same measure of mercy that we’ve shown to our brothers and sisters. Love, above all else, is key to being in Christ.

I’m gonna share this video everywhere now

Very well spoken.
Oh, ok
Again it’s very sad and pathetic that some gay men need to be reminded that all black people are not alike and don’t think the same things.
This ridiculous racism is so ironic. It shouldn’t even need to have been said.
What I’d love to know is where are the gay people preaching racial equality and where are the gay people helping the black community since we’re apparently obligated as an entire people to help you yet I don’t see you lifting fingers for us not even the black gays.
Oh, ok
“Not even the black gays” meant the rest of this so called “gay community” doesn’t even help black gays. Events are all segregated with the major ones being unwelcoming of any non-whites and so many people whisper about black men being “on the downlow” yet I see no resources by the “gay community” to help black men who are closeted have a safe place to come out.
Bob
@Oh, ok: And who gave any man a safe place to come out. We all have to find that safe place within ourselves.
Me
Wow!! Thank you!
Oh, ok
@Bob: Every big city with a large gay population that ironically is unwelcoming of black gay men so they had to create their own places to go which shouldn’t have ever had to happen.
Your turn.
DMI
@Oh, ok: “Every big city with a large gay population that ironically is unwelcoming of black gay men…”
I see you’re back to your old tricks of completely making shit up.
Fitz
An ally. Someone I would fight for.
Oh, ok
@DMI: Every city has varied race based prides with the mainstream white one being unwelcoming of most other races as in they will pretend you aren’t there and completely ignore you.
How am I making that up? Because you say so?
Why are you so defensive and why do you presume to know an anonymous person on the internet?
Do you benefit from gays being segregated in some way?
hassia
@DMI: You only have to look at some of the ads on a variety of gay sites and you will see the all too familiar NO BLACK NO ASIANS, very normal and people do not have a problem writing that in their profiles. So he is not making things up.
Lee
@hassia: And those will be the same hypocritical queens turning around and crying foul over homophobia. How about “no fats/fems/over 40”? Yet discrimination upsets us. The irony!
hassia
@Lee: ditto.
Who are you B!tch, New lunch?
@Fitz: You are a bigot sir and I don’t think the good Rev. would consider you his ally or would want you as one.
Fitz
@Who are you B!tch, New lunch?: Who gives a flying fuck what you think, douchebag. I’m aware, not a bigot. A black man who stands up for equality: that’s an ally.
Tackle
That was a beautiful message. And he has a lot going for him. Besides being goodlooking, he’s well spoken, spiritual and sinsible.
Who are you B!tch, New lunch?
@queerty stop moderating me. No wonder no one comes to this Oh’so shitty site.

Thanks for posting the fact that there is a diversity of views on marriage equality. Posting Black Conservative Pastor comments as representative of all Blacks is like posting comments by Rick Warren as representing all Whites or using the Governor of Nebraska’s recent comment to say what all Whites think or using Russia’s anti-gay policies as an example of what all Whites think. Its just not reality. The narrative is thankfully changing, but the bigots will always try to divide and conquer. Its important to point out that the bigots are losing ground and that love is winning out.

Marriage is not now under attack because of the LGBT rights movement. “Marriage was under attack years ago when men viewed women as property and children as trophies of their sexual prowess. Marriage is under attack by low wages, high incarceration, and lack of eduction.” Powerful words, and a powerful indictment of all the social injustices NOT being fought by the republicans who claim to be a friend to folks with values.
