Rick Santorum: GOP Acceptance Of Gay Marriage Will Lead To “Destruction Of Our Republic”

santorumOh Rick Santorum, your delusional worldview continues to delight and awe, even after your relevance has faded.

Last month, the heterosexual former presidential candidate spoke at the Midwest Republican Leadership Conference. As you could have guessed, Santorum took the opportunity to blame Will & Grace for instigating the End Times.

“The sexual revolution caused a big change in sexual mores in the country,” he said. “But when it came to the issue of marriage, and changing the definition of marriage, there was no change. None, zero, for 30 years. And then a television show came on the air called Will & Grace. And look at it, from that point on… the needle started moving.”

Santorum then went on to talk about how the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down part of DOMA would lead to the persecution of Christians. Because, you know, Christians have a long history of being oppressed in America.

“We have hate crimes in this country, for hate speech,” he said. “It’s coming. This isn’t about tolerance. We tolerate. Christian’s are the most tolerant people in the world. Tolerance is different than approval. We love everyone. We know everybody sins. We know we all fall short, and that’s what we tolerate.”

The exceedingly tolerant Santorum concluded with an ominous prediction about the consequences of endorsing same-sex marriage. He warned, “For the Republican party even to contemplate going along with this is the destruction of our republic.”

Big words for such a tiny man. Anyway, we’ve been to our share of gay weddings recently, and if they’re any indication of what the apocalypse is going to look like, then sign us the hell up.

“For the Republican party even to contemplate going along with this is the destruction of our republic.” Because….? Funny, they never say why or how.

He was voted out by the people of his own good state and twice failed to get the GOP nomination. He is irrelevant, but is whoring his way around the ultraconservative groups and spouting off whatever he thinks they want to hear. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if he made one more run for the presidency.

He wouldn’t have said it unless he is worried that Republicans are getting soft on gays. That’s a good sign.

A likely candidate for President in 2016, his comments are terrible because a) he actually, fundamentally believes what he says is true and b) millions of our fellow Americans believe him, as well, and will vote for him.

They’re also the same people who will throw a rock or a fist or swing a knife or shoot a gun in your face because you’re queer. These are the people Rick Santorum represents and all of us should fear him and fight him with our money and our votes.

If it was up to him, I wouldn’t have been able to legally marry my partner of fifteen years last week and because of him, awful things happen to gay people every day across America. Its a fight and its simply not over and his remarks confirm for that for all of us.

Screw him & G-d bless all of you. J.

@nf0603: No, even better — a raging bottom, scat queen. It would be in keeping with the name Dan Savage gave him.

Well, Mr. Frothy Mix, since YOU are a Dominionist who wants to turn our republic into a theocracy, you will have to forgive me if I am not swayed but your specious hate filled diatribes against those who believe in equality for all.

Man he’s going HAM on that ice cream cone! Hasn’t he ever heard of licking??

Guess when it comes to a big, thick chocolate swirl, he doesn’t want to do that “thing with his tungg,” preferring instead to take it ALL in.

I do hope that Eric McCormick, Sean Hayes, Debra Messing, and Megan Mullally get to read this horsecrap from the Santorum (and we all know what the word “santorum” really means, right?). To think that their witty and often warm little sitcom caused the end of Western Civ and Christianity as we know it (OK, as Ricky Santorum knowns it) would give all of their hearts great joy.

Would someone just fuck him in the ass and shut him up forever? Could this man be any more obsessed with gay sex? With all those kids he bred, statistically at least one of them is gay. Will he or she be kicked to the curb? Stay tuned.

Santorum says, “For the Republican party even to contemplate going along with this is the destruction of our republic.”

No, but if Republicans continue to oppose gay rights and embrace people like Santorum, it WILL lead to the destruction of the Republican Party. It almost seems like it already has.

Spending so much time and energy denigrating the gay community is not doing much for Santorum’s karma. He should think about that.

The tea party recently endorsed Rick Santorum to run as a presidential candidate in 2016. It’s rather interesting to note that hard-core bigots like this deny the fact that their current bigotry and the denial of equality towards us is identical as was toward black people back in the 50s and 60s. Yet they use exactly the same methodology and techniques against us today as they did towards black people back in the day. As was then and as is now, these will ultimately fail. But even as strong racism is still alive in certain rural regions today, hatred towards gays in remote social conservative enclaves will always remain. There is one main difference though, unlike people of color, we can blend in with even our most staunch enemies and detractors and this is a tactical advantage for winning this war that has been waged against us. Religious people believe that we only comprise between 1% and 2% of the populace. I say let them continue to believe this.

They are so deluded with those percentages. If they would just count up the attendance at Gay Pride parades — only the ones that are held on the same Sunday in June, so there’s no duplication — they would realize what that 1 percent figure would mean. If we were only 1 percent of the population, it means that straight people outnumber gays at Gay Pride parades!

When asked on “Meet the Press” what he would do if his son came out to him, Santorum said, “I would love him as much as I did the second before he said it, and I would try to do everything I can to be as good a father to him as possible.”

The problem comes with how that “love” may be expressed, particularly in a very religious family. It often means trying to coerce the child, “for his own good,” into becoming something he’s not. Even Santorum’s former press secretary, Robert Traynham, criticized his boss’s anti-gay rhetoric for its possible negative effect on children.

The Santorums have nine children (the former senator is also opposed to birth control), so the chances are good that there’s a gay kid in the mix whose psyche has already been scarred by the parents’ condemnation of gays. And if not, Rick and Karen Santorum are doing their best to usher nine more bigots into a homophobic society.
