Right-Wing News Site Edits AP’s Gay Take

Conservative new site One News Now took a few liberties with the Associated Press‘ article on Hallmark’s gay marriage cards.

As you can see, ONN added a few contentious quotation marks to the term “marriage,” and, as if that’s not queer enough, replaces the word “same-sex” with homosexual. They do, however, refer to “same-sex civil unions.” So, the H-word, long a panic button for the right, is linked to marriage – warning! – while “same-sex” nestles safely next to civil unions, far removed from “tradition.”

A CNN reporter got caught up in a similar “nuptial” situation, but corrected his or her mistake. We doubt ONN, which is owned by the Bible-thumping American Family News Network, will do that same. (See screen shots below.)

AFA runs all AP news stories through a filter which automatically replaces all references to “gay” with “homosexual” and putting the word “marriage” in quotes whenever it follows the words “same sex” or “gay”.

This was particularly funny when Tyson Gay became “Tyson Homosexual” in news stories. I have to wonder if the AP would object to having their stories edited to provide a slant, while still running under under the AP header.

I remember when that story broke, but can’t recall if it had filter for “civil union.” Perhaps they’ve – gasp! – evolved?

Nothing new here. Good.As.You has been pointing out the shenanigans for a while now.

I’m sure somewhere it would be considered fair use. Which means, of course, we can change James Dobson and Pat Robertson’s name in any press release to “asshat”.
