Rufus Not Against Gay Marriage For You, Just Him

“Singer Rufus Wainwright came under fire from gay rights advocates for quotes in [The NY Press] in which the star stated he was “not a huge supporter of gay marriage”.Wainwright states he didn’t mean to make a stand against gay marriage insisting he meant he wouldn’t want to take legally binding vows himself. He says, “Recently, a quote from an interview was taken out of context and as these things go, it has appeared on many internet sites. So, to set the record straight (or shall we say gay?), I am not nor have I ever been opposed to anyone’s right to marry – straight or gay.”I have voiced my strong opposition to Prop 8 on many occasions and will continue to do so until that referendum is reversed…I myself just don’t want to (marry) at the moment and feel a strong tie to the traditional bohemian concept of being a homosexual, ie: the last thing we want is to be like everybody else. But who knows, a girl likes options. Maybe someday I will want to marry!”[WENN]

That’s exactly my position, Rufus.

Who cares what a formerly-tweaked out Canadian celebrity who wrote music about his promiscuity thinks about the “big issues” in US politics? You might as well ask Chuck Norris what his opinion about Canadian provincial transfer payments are.

@Brian Miller: I, for one, would be very interested in learning preceisely what Mr. Norris’ views are vis-a-vis provincial transfer payments, and would be even more interested in learning what provincial transfer payments are.

:-)

Whatever. The “marry a dog” line? Still fucking stupid.

I no longer feel bad that I haven’t much enjoyed his past two albums.

Rufus needs to go away for a while, work on his music, get better at that, maybe become a little more mature in all ways and then return as a musician, not a “spokesgay” on issues.

Who is Rufus Wainwright? I live in Canada and have asked who he is and nobody seems to know or care.

Team Rufus. I fully support equal rights, but I don’t take kindly to the gay mainstream throwing single (and happy) gays, polyamorists, and plain old sluts under the bus or pressuring us into what is, at its core, a heteronormative and incredible oppressive relationship model. Guess what? Marriage isn’t for everybody, I daresay not even for most, and all of society would be a lot better off if we just fucking dismantled the whole damned institution already.

Rufus Wainwright is a gift to our community and to the arts in general. You may not have appreciated his comments but lets not disparage someone who has talent that clearly goes beyond politics or demographics. His explaination to me is perfectly reasonable. He prefers the Bohemian achetype of the gay experience — rejecting convention for personal and sexual freedom. I for one appreciate that perspective very much. He is a genius. And yes, I totally have a crush on him. And just in case he or a friend of his is bothering to read this post … I’d love to have dinner with you Rufus … anytime.
