RuPaul’s Latest Doesn’t Leave Us Jealous of Anything

rupaulvid18

It’s a mix between a bareback porn and Peanut Butter Jelly Time, but Drag Race star RuPaul’s video for her second single “Jealous of My Boogie” is out and, well, let’s just say we prefer “Cover Girl.” The user-generated “Let’s Turn The Night” is, frankly, more creative. Even soft lighting can’t help this one. [via WOW]

I wasn’t going to say anything nice anyway, since I am so unhappy with her performance on Dragrace.. but this really is bad. Yoko bad.

Ru was inspired by the techno mash-up phenomenon currently sweeping Japan, whereby kids are splicing old gay porno footage of Billy Herrington with mad Japanese graphics, plus the occasional baby head to cover any exposed goodies.(Copied from the WOW Report).

At first I thought it was really out there, but darned if I don’t keep watching over again and again.

AND THANKS FOR THE PLUG ON “LET’S TURN THE NIGHT” I composed that mashup video from film footage I shot during the NYC protests against Prop :

whenever a drag queen goes out in the world to do her unique thing – no mater how fierce, there s always some drunk gay in an abercrombie tshirt yelling, “girl, you better learn to walk in those shoes!”.
      jealous!

That was just tacky and a hot mess, but, that’s what the former diva has turned into of late, sad when you think of how great her career was years ago.

Im really feeling this video. SparkleObama, I think you are getting at what Ru may have been trying to say with this video. While I am not going to critique the artistry of this video, I think that Ru’s aesthetic choices should not be used to occlude the powerful message behind her video.

Her “boogie”, at least in my take, is his self-expression as drag queen and as effeminate male. Ru’s image is contrasted with Mr. Pseudo Muscle Daddy in the video, who is sexualized by being naked in the video. By “jealous of my boogie” I think he is countering the very real intolerant treatment of effeminate males and drag queens within the gay community. I cannot explain or count the number of times my flamboyance and “outrageous choices” have been critiqued and challenged in gay spaces. While this is more than expected outside of such spaces, I would expect some respect for my gendered choices within a group that has been the target of injustice and discrimination.

Seems Ms Paul quietly released a whole album, or I’m late as usual. Champion released March 9, 09.

      My pick is Lady Boy.

      As for the video: PASS.

      @J:

      i dunno.
i like some of the new album, but i enjoyed the soundtrack from “starbooty the movie” a little better.
some of the circuit-sounding anthems on ‘champion’ could have benefited from added live instrumentation and beefier backing vocals.
i like ‘jealous of my boogie’, ‘trannychaser”, ‘covergirl’ and ru’s joyous, retro-disco duet w/lady bunny.
when rupaul sings with bunny his vocals improve * A LOT*.
